A 200 hour "pilot" in a 737?

In the U.S.A., 200 hours would not qualify for any kind of commercial flying, not under Part 121, not under Part 135, not even under Part 91 (example of commercial flying under Part 91: getting paid to ferry a Cessna 150, or even a J-3 Cub, to or from a maintenance facility).

The absolute minimum for a commercial certificate here in the U.S. is 250 hours, not 200 hours. For those who want a reference, look at FAR 61.129, it can be found on the faa.gov website.

This 200 hour pilot would not have been legal under U.S. regulations, even before the change that became effective on August 1, 2014.

I went to MTSU. The part 141 approved curriculum was 190 hours for a commercial certificate.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

OOPS! I never thought of looking at 141, I only checked 61.

It's all good, I doubt many people try to make it out of there at minimum anymore given how much time you have to have to be hired anywhere these days. When I went you could still get a regional job with a fresh commercial.

A couple more fun examples: Towing banners, towing gliders.
I think (but don't know) that AmeriFlight and others who used to shuttle checks in the early hours of the morning (you may have heard the term freight dog) may have done so under part 91.

Yeah, I flew banner tow. Once. That was enough for me.

Check running days are mostly over now, but there was an incident I'll never forget. I was on my way back from Birmingham to ORL. Weather was gorgeous, but I had filed IFR mainly to make it easier to deal with the Orlando Class B.

I heard a gal in one of the local check runner C-210s on the frequency. Orlando Approach was vectoring her for sequence, she had the airport in sight and requested clearance for a visual approach. Nope, got to maintain IFR separation. She got frustrated and told them, "Cancel my IFR." Approach control did so, at her request, and told her that after landing, ground control would have a phone number for her to call, as she was now in Class B without a clearance. Razz

In addition to international events and tourism, Ethiopia is seeking industrial modernization and foreign investment - though also strangling a lot of it throug slow, overbearing bureaucracy. In my last job our office supported an entrepreur from the electoral district of my boss in his endeavor to build an ethanol plant using sugar refinery waste there. Literally for years, as he went there frequently while the process stalled to the point he went nearly bankrupt.

Meanwhile several countries including Ethiopia, but also Brazil, China, Germany and the UK have banned 737 Max 8 flights from their airspace in what looks like kneejerk reactions to me. The German transport minister's move in particular seems to be for scoring cheap political points by being seen to do something on a hyped issue that has actually no local bearing - it was noted that in fact none of this type currently use German airports, but there's sure a lot of them transiting the airspace ...

The populist lunacy of trial by social media continues to infest and devour everything...

Never thought it was make it to air travel - what is next, 'Fair Seating', 'Fair Pricing'?

It never ends.

This is insanity. And now Elizabeth Warren is out there calling for the grounding of these planes as if she is a freakin' expert on the subject. Total frantic ignorance on what is becoming a global scale on full display. Where are the damn adults?

Boeing engineers must be ripping their hair out by now at so much kneejerk ignorance.

I'm reminded of the book Airframe by Michael Crichton.

Looks like the UK jumped on the 737-Max ban as well, some planes had to turn around and land somewhere else.

I read that just recently. While it's obvious he had several big chips on his shoulder, I find his description of trial by media of the aircraft industry pretty accurate. Only some weeks ago after Airbus' decision to stop production of the A380, local media called the type the blunder of the century, driven by egomanical hubris, etc. Now they're going similarly overboard by calling the Max 8 a misconstruction, talking of fear of flying due to the "horror crashes", and so on.

I have the quite reasonable suspicion that the alternating frenzies are happily fed by lobbyists for Boeing and Airbus respectively, á la Chrichton. For Airbus this would certainly be sweet revenge for the long "if it's not Boeing I ain't going"-style badmouthing of their aircraft as computer-guided flying deathtraps after similar incidents (see Air France 447, etc.).

Boeing has got to be shitting a brick right now! Eek

Airplanes are becoming far too complex to fly. Pilots are no longer needed, but rather computer scientists from MIT. I see it all the time in many products. Always seeking to go one unnecessary step further, when often old and simpler is far better. Split second decisions are....

7:00 AM - 12 Mar 2019

....needed, and the complexity creates danger. All of this for great cost yet very little gain. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want Albert Einstein to be my pilot. I want great flying professionals that are allowed to easily and quickly take control of a plane!

Ireland, Turkey, Netherlands, Germany, France, and Iceland have all pulled the plug, and made planes turn around mid flight.

So have all these countries and airlines already gotten initial clues to the crash, thus all the banning??

I wonder if witnesses' reports of smoke (white smoke to top it off) are reliable?

They don't know jack. Complete hysteria.

Maybe a James Bond villian has shorted the stock or something. Roll Eyes

Honestly, it might be a good time to buy some Boeing stock after it dips a bit more.

With all due respect, Mr. President, you don't know the first fucking thing about flying/operating an aircraft certified under 14 CFR Part 121. Let me know, Mr. President, when you get your B737 type-rating and then MAYBE we'll have a common frame of reference with which to have a discussion. In the meantime, please keep your sophomoric, knee-jerk, uneducated, twitter pie-hole shut. I think you have waaaaaaaay bigger fish to fry, so let those with the knowledge and expertise handle this for you. Thank you sir...

"Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil... Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel." - Isaiah 5:20,24
