This is incorrect information. Warfarin is cheap and requires regular bloodwork, Xarelto and Eliquis do not.

When starting XARELTO®, it takes 2–4 hours for it to reach its full blood-thinning effect, and it leaves your system more quickly than warfarin—typically in about 24 hours.

It is true that Vitamin K can reverse Warfarin but it typically takes at least four to six hours. It is certainly not immediate.

I’m feeling fine today, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything with neurological problems. Eye is back to normal. Still hooked up to the heparin drip, but the doc says that’s coming out soon and they’ll start me on Eliquis. I need to ask about that in the context of my liver, as I recall that being the reason my cardio put me on Xarelto after my ablation. Or maybe it was the other way around. I can’t remember.

They did an echo on my heart, and a bubble test. Doctors will know what this is.

Oh, they just unplugged the heparin. Asked about liver damage with Eliquis, nurse looked it up and said “DON’T take that pill, I’ll be right back.” So, things are happening.

Anyways, bubble test. So, I’ll have to wait to hear from the cardiologist, but they did an echo on my heart, and shot a syringe loaded with a bubble mix of saline into my IV, and some of the bubbles made it from the right chamber to the left, which means I have a tiny hole in the wall of my heart. This means that blood coming from my legs with clots to the right ventricle can literally bleed over to the left side of my heart, taking little clots with it. It may be possible that a clot traveled to my heart from my leg, went through that hole to that chamber, which pumps blood directly to the brain, and that little clot landed in a spot where I would definitely notice it, but where it wouldn’t cause damage. So, I got incredibly lucky, is what it sounds like. I feel like the hole was something my cardiologist mentioned before, but my memory from that time is really hazy. So I’ll have to follow up with a new cardiologist in Arizona, and see what they say. The MRI showed no damage, and the doc said if everything keeps looking good, they’ll turn me loose today.

Again, thanks for all the well-wishes. This sucks, but it sounds like it could have been a whole lot worse. Hoping I get out of here soon. The UPS Fairy is bringing me two thousand rounds of M855, and I need to get home so Porch Pirate doesn’t get it.

I, too, have a PFO (hole in my heart). Discovered on a dive. Long story short, I had an an Amplatzer device placed in my heart to block the hole, so hopefully no more fun surprises like that for me- maybe ask your doc if it’s something to consider for you. I get to go have the bubble test next week to see if it’s all still holding up well (I had it done a few years ago).

Happy that you caught this and got it treated right away, and that the recovery is going well. I've been on Eliquis twice a day for several years now, with no problems. (A little bruising from time to time.)
