Been in Texas about 35 years this stent, and 5 on the first go round. All in the DFW area, Tarrant County (Fort Worth) Not country, and no big ass lots, although you can find land but it's a big premium. I like it. We are close to our kids and extended families. As long as the libs stay the fuck out and don't screw up our mostly conservative leaning, I'll be happy to live out my life here. But unless you have job or family ties there are better areas to live in. Hill country, east Texas (Pines) coastal areas except nasty hurricane seasons, and out west if you like big land, with room to roam and don't need a CVS every 100 yards.

Been thinking about doing the same, found surprisingly the places I looked had high housing costs. I was basing this on being in/near cities. Richardson was where I was looking closest and it was only 70% of the cost of where I live currently (outside DC in the richest county in America).

I'm sure there are much cheaper options, but I need to be near large fiber optic cables for work.

My in laws are in Martinsburg, WV and had a buddy just escape Fairfax County to move to Florida. The second his company said he could work remotely him and his wife started looking for places in Florida. DFW is the only metro area I'd live in in Texas. If my wife didn't work in Dallas we'd live further on the west side of DFW near Weatherford.

BQ is good in TX. I vote FLA for the proximity to beaches and oceans.

I lived in N. TX 17 yrs outside Dallas. FLA gives you hurricanes. TX gives you hurricanes, but also ice storms, tornadoes, etc, depending on where you live. Also, TX doesn't manage its "independent" infrastructure very well. I wouldn't go long term permanent in either of them.

I live in NE Dallas and my church is in Richardson. I moved to this area 40 years ago following being reared in Detroit, Michigan and then 20 years USAF (retired Captain). After retiring and moving here I worked 26 years for Texas Instruments and retired (again) from them.

Although Dallas is one of the more "Liberal" locations in Texas, it wouldn't be judged "Liberal" by California standards. I like it here. There's a pretty nice indoor gun range just 3 miles from my house and there are outdoor ranges within a couple of hours drive. All the big-city conveniences are here, of course, and excellent WiFi is certainly available. If you want a taste of less-Liberal more "Old West" flavor, it's only an hour's drive to Fort Worth. There are more than a half-dozen excellent hospitals within 30 minutes of my home.

I've not compared cost of living with other places in the US, but I don't think it's all that high around here. Right now gas is just under $2.60/gal--higher than it has been, but not exorbitant in my opinion.

I'm single and have no intentions of moving, so I've not done any research in areas that matter to you, but I like it here.

As a 59 year Texan, I can't disagree with any of the posts made in this thread..

As to bigguy's post above, I agree with it too.
Stay out of Dallas county completely...

We live in Forney, just east of Dallas, and are looking to move further out..
East Dallas has taken over Mesquite.
Mesquite is taking over Forney, and we need to get the fuck out of here..

Looking to find something in Will's Point/Canton.
Or maybe down to bigguy's area of Mansfield or Waxahachie..

I love Texas, but the big cities are blue and getting bluer..

The thread is about a member, from another state, asking about moving to Texas..
I wouldn't recommend Dallas, and I've lived here my entire life.

It isn't that Dallas worries me, I deal with it on a daily basis, without fear, for 59 years.

My wife works downtown and has fended off more than one (or 10 in the last 16 years) homeless asshole accosting her simply for being a petite white woman.
But she is fearless, armed, and can handle herself.

Why don't you take a walk down Kiest at Ledbetter at midnight and see how that goes?
I'd bet a walk thru downtown Edgewood at midnight would be a little more peaceful.

If someone asks about moving here from another state, I'm not going to lie to them.
The city Dallas is a literal liberal shithole and the mayor of Dallas is a spineless pussy, just like the last 6 mayors before him.

If you don't see that, you are simply fucking stupid...

There are PLENTY of other options to suggest to an outsider for a place to live in Texas that would be much more satisfactory than ANYWHERE in Dallas County..

Yep, and same with Houston. I've lived here continuously since 1975, and I can tell you avoid it like the plague. It has become a commielib shithole. I'm living just out of the city limit but still in Harris County, and as mentioned by erj_pilot above, stay the hell away from this shitty county, also. It turned completely blue at every level of government from completely red just a few years ago. If I didn't have deep family ties here, I would have moved long ago. I'm still planning to move eventually, but time is running shorter and shorter with each passing year.

I lived in Harris country (in Houston city limits) for a while and I would avoid that at all costs. I would check property tax rates with wherever you choose, inside areas like Harris County they can be excessive. Consider the trouble of hurricanes, they can be a pain and I was just without electricity again this week from the one that just passed. Consider the excessive heat with high humidity along the coast. If you choose to live in this area, summers are not pleasant. Land is expensive in most populated areas I have looked at. Also, if you live near the coast or even in a coastal county, home insurance is high for wind coverage. I am 40 miles from the coast but most insurance companies will not insure me because I am in Galveston County and they avoid hurricane prone areas like the plague.

Why do I live here? Plenty of jobs that pay well, I like that overall Texas is conservative but quickly going liberal (and already there in all major cities). When I retire I will most likely move farther north, I like the Tyler area for weather, type of topography and the small town feel.

I lived in Lewisville, Richardson, Mckinney, Dallas area for 10 years. It's DAM crowded now. In 99 when I moved there, not that terrible.

It's basically doubled since then. I don't like it there anymore. I'd get further south somewhere, down by Best of the West range. Those old M14 shooters are down that way too. More rural the better.

Or Ft Worth side way out would be better I think.

Texas has a lot to offer but I just don't like the crowding.

Then again a lot of people have moved here in the past 18 months. The housing market is strong, our development was in the boonies of Orlando when we bought, now it's surrounded.

Taxes are not that bad on houses, and no income tax, sales tax is in line, 7 to 6.5 % here.

Humidity is high in the summers, well ok it's humid all the time.

The DFW area is crowded because of the abundance of job opportunities and the amenities that brings with it. All of the major metro areas in Texas are the same in this regard. (Houston, Austin, San Antonio et al) If you are not concerned with finding employment, don't have family ties or are concerned with having access to top tier hospitals and doctors, then look to smaller out of the way areas. I do however find the Fort Worth side less hectic and less crowded, but with the many new large companies moving in, it is growing fast.
