I had a full glass of water beside my laptop to block Oliver (the cat) from getting my piece of cheese and in trying to force past he tipped it over on the keyboard! I immediately turned it over and shut it off but now a week later it still won't power on even doing a hot start. I left it in a bag with rice for a few of the days too.

Fortunately it's been backed up every week. Also I got it in 2009, in fact it's too old to even update to Apples latest OS.

So I'm looking on Apple's site at new ones. Eek Looks like they've gone up quite a bit, maybe $1,800 for what I want but SSD and a faster processor will be nice.

Look for refurbished Macs . They have the same warranty.

I'll look at them but when I did a few years back they weren't that much less, maybe 10%. Still I'll check into them.

My sister just mentioned they are updating the MacBook Pro very soon so maybe they'll offer discounts on current ones?

Just how long have you had a cat?

My wife usually has a glass of water sitting on a table next to her. Our newest family member seems to think it fun to pull it over. (And her tea/coffee cup, too.)

Since I bought myself a tacticool black Ozark Trail 20oz cup a couple weeks ago, I gave her my plain stainless one. Now, when that cat pulls it over, much less water all over the place. (So, if anybody's wondered how well the lids stay put: Very well.)

Told my wife she's on her own with the tea/coffee cup problem.

As for the MacBook... Since my wife and I have iPads, and I have an Anker Bluetooth keyboard for mine, I plan to go with Mac Minis. Or at least one, for her. I haven't decided whether or not to move my combined desktop/network server to the basement and replace my desktop with a Mac Mini, as well.

I've had the cat long enough to know better so I can't really be pissed of at him. My fault.

Compared to a laptop it sure is a PIA pecking away on a phone or my iPad Mini though.

Yeah the new motorcycle may delay getting a new MacBook! Smile

Have you tried talking to Apple about the cost of repair? I've seen a lot worse done to hardware and seen it survive.

I've never had a MacBook, or any other Mac<whatever>, apart, but, assuming it's not too unlike any MS-Win/whatever laptop: I'd disassemble it entirely and give it a good, long going over with a blow dryer or the like.

(Actually, I'd dry it in an oven, but, that's only for people that understand the temperature limitations of the various bits of electronics and should not be attempted by amateurs.)

Do not try the microwave method unless you really, really, know what you're doing! Wink

There are rumors that new MacBook models will be announced monday at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference. Updated processors are expected to be announced.

At least you can blame the cat.

I myself spilled Dr. Pepper on my keyboard a while back.
I turned it upside down too. Seemed to work, but later the Dr. Pepper dried and the keys stuck. I had to get a new keyboard. Still works fine.

I lost a MacBook Pro by dumping my morning coffee on the keyboard. I was backed up but I hate that I had to buy a new computer.

Yeah WWDC is coming up real soon. (June 5)
They're likely to release some new stuff then.

my Apple guys gave me a keyboard cover to prevent dust from getting into the keyboard, may work for liquids if you are fairly quick.

My son decided his MacBook Pro he received for a Christmas present a couple years ago wanted to taste (spilt) the sweet and sour soup that was sitting next to it

Didn't so much like it, killed it

Needless to say son still does not have a laptop........ "until he has respect for his belongings". He's 15

I went through this about a year ago. Apple juice got spilled on the MacBook I had bought new for my wife. Keyboard was screwed. I went to Apple and was quoted somewhere around $800. I checked a third party repair place and didn't fair much better. I ended up selling it "as is" on ebay with a detailed description for somewhere around $700, then replaced it with a refurb from Apple.

Apple refurb prices are usually about 15% off, have same warranty and look as new.

I had a close call a few years back with water a MacBook Air, ever since my number one rule is when the Mac comes out, no beverages allowed on same surface or within 3 feet.

My bride slopped coffee with cream and stevia on the keyboard of her Macbook. She replaced the keyboard herself. It still works two-three years later. I was impressed that she managed to do that successfully and salvage the thing.

Great karma, please include me!

I figure that's about the only way I'll ever own a Mac. They're unaffordable to me.

Look on eBay. There are Mac resellers refurbishing trade-ins and selling for decent prices.

Just looked at a 2012 MacBook Pro for $450 from a reseller in Kansas. And the difference between an '09 MBP and a '12 MBP is huge.
