Depending on how adventurous you and your wife want to be, I'd recommend putting together a trip to Costa Rica. There are websites for tour companies where you can pick where you want to begin your vacation, choose the relative level of activity & relaxation you're interested in, and choose the hotel quality. My wife (who is NOT adventurous or an outdoor enthusiast) and I did a trip starting on the West Coast (flying into Liberia CR), beginning with 3 days of horseback riding/rainforest tours/hot springs; then 3 days in the Monte Verde cloud forest - zip lining, rappelling down waterfalls, white water rafting, and rainforest walks at night; then back to the West coast again for 3 days of snorkeling from a catamaran and beach relaxation. The trip was extremely affordable, and best of all (1) the van that drove us on the 4 hour cross country transitions was on time, every time, and the driver was very skilled; and (2) in every hotel we selected, the water was safe enough to drink right out of the tap, and you could order ice with your drinks without worry. The only thing we had to decide on this trip was where to have dinner each night. Highly recommended. The tour company we used was Pacific Tradewinds Tours, but since we took this vacation 6 years ago, you may want to check to be sure who has the best reputation and service today. My wife still raves about this being one of the best vacations ever.

In the summer, I'd opt to visit Quebec City and
it's surroundings.

Edit to add: Costa Rica is always cool.

North Captiva Island in FL if you want a relaxation vacation. You fly into Ft Myers, go grocery and booze shopping. Load it onto a ferry to the island then drive a golf cart around and relax in a beach house.

If you do Alaska, plan for July rather than August. August is usually the rainiest month of the year. Do a one way cruise from Seattle or Vancouver that goes all the way up to Seward or Whittier. Also do the Denali extension. Interior and coastal Alaska are very different from one another.

My wife and I live in central Florida. We are about an hour and a half from Port Canaveral. We like to go on seven day Caribbean cruises.

There are several cruise lines that sail out of port Canaveral so there are many island destinations to choose form that the ships go to.

We like the cruise because we drive to the port and park the car, get on the ship and unpack once, your room and restaurants go with you as you sail from island to island, depending on how many islands the ship goes to we have a different place to see almost every day and when were done we pack once, load the car and go home.

The other nice part is, if we go to an island that does not have anything that interest us, we can just stay on the ship and relax.

With a $6000.00 budget for just the two of you, you can do a lot depending on the cruise line. My wife and I tend to do Disney and they tend to be more expensive than most other cruise lines.

Right now there were several cruise lines offering different packages for some nice cruises.

We have been looking at NCL. We sailed with them in February/March 2020 (two weeks before the cruises industry shut down)and had a good time.

We have also been looking at MSC and Royal Caribbean and they have some good itinerary's and their prices are really good for some of the itinerary's we like.
The only thing you have to watch is some cruise lines do a one way cruises. They do them for really great prices however at the last Island you have to fly back to pick up your car if you drove.

You say you live in Tennessee, what part? My father in law live in the far north east TN and for him it is about a 10 to 11 hour drive the port so it could be done in a day.
Most people would driving in the night before, getting a room near the port then driving over the next day to get on the ship.

Good luck.

David, are they priced for single accommodations? I've heard that some aren't.

I would definitely like to do some of those European river cruises.

To my taste, the traditional week at the beach beats any river or island cruise option. Rent a house for a week and just chill. Hard to get to $6K even with inflated east coast pricing. Now there are certainly different atmospheres/cultures associated with various beach communities, and I am not suggesting being indiscriminate, but the same choice options apply to cruises or fixed location resorts, without the hassles of COVID-induced International travel difficulties.

They are, it is very slow and everything comes in by boat or barge of course. Thousand a day to ferry your crew back and forth. Any quantity of material is by barge and you pay out of pocket until/if insurance pays. Contractors are overwhelmed with work, most pass on the hassle of the out islands.
Apologies to OP for the thread drift.

Buy a $5,000 motorcycle and ride for about $1,000 worth of gas?

Other than one bad (and expensive trip), my best vacations were riding trips.

Other ideas for me...would include getting into the woods for 2 weeks minimum, and renting a houseboat somewhere isolated for as long as I could afford.

Perhaps Rent an RV and just hit the road without a plan or schedule?

The wife and I did the 7 day Alaska cruise this past May from Vancouver to Seward. We spent 4 days in Vancouver first. We cruised on NCL. Great vacation, we plan to go again in a few years.

Quebec City has a lot to see. There are also day trips to Montmorency Falls, Basilica of Ste. Anne de Beaupré, and the Ile l'Orleans. Photos of that tour here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/...202/with/6091283762/ and here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/...57631963948981/page2 (second page).

I don't remember, you'd have to query them about it. I've done 2 Avalon Waterways river cruises, a 15-day Danube-Main-Rhine and a 7-day Seine. Both were very enjoyable. Viking has virtually identical tours. Photos:
