Well it's almost done and I didn't see a recent discussion. The crowds are back and so is the heat. Amazing scenery and some bikes.

Best race in years. The way this thing started I was sure Pogi was unstoppable. Jumbo finally wore him down. I think he got a little too confident at the start and burned too much energy on unnecessary attacks. If he had Jumbos team he could get away with it, but he really only has McNulty.

The fact that it is no longer covered widely, meaning it is restricted to limited appeal pay to see sites, has taken it away from many who would otherwise enjoy the spectacle. In my view they've shot themselves in the foot.

Cycling has never really been huge here anyways. Most people don't seem to understand the tactics, they just see some dudes on a bike. Americans don't have the attention span to follow 21 days of races.

It's aired on USA network ever day. Furthermore, I love the fact that today I can now watch from the very start of the race to the very end, where in previous years when it was broadcast on NBC you'd only be able to jump in at some point after the race had already started.
I still pay for cable so with that I have a Peacock account. With Peacock I can watch the whole race live or whenever I want. Or you can tune into USA network normally around 8am eastern time to watch the race already about an hour in.

Disappointing in that Cavendish and Alaphilippe didn't make any teams. Wout van Aert is a beast.

Like I said, limited appeal pay to see sites... Peacock and USA.
And yes I used to enjoy watching it when broadcast free much like I once was able to enjoy off road vehicle rally events.

And the coverage left much to be desired. And that's an understatement. I much prefer what we get now, as I'm sure is the case with a huge majority of diehard fans.

Agreed that over the years the coverage got worse and worse still....
When I pop open Peacock+, it seems 80% of their content requires a subscription. They didn't start out that way. As for USA I believe you need cable. And their content was degrading back before I cut the cord.
Folks are faced with having to subscribe to any number of services just for a single "specialty" they offer. I cut the cord and refuse to play this game.

I agree, and the reason I have not watched the race ... the same is happening with the America's Cup.

It's not about attention span. NASCAR, golf, & baseball are slow-paced sports w/ esoteric tactics that get wide coverage in the US. The difference is that mainstream America won't get invested in a foreign sport such as cycling or soccer unless an American(s) is a favorite to win. There is no LeMond or Armstrong contending in the TdF; therefore, interest & coverage in the US wanes.

Stage 21 float trip into Paris and cobblestone sprint finish as the sun begins its decent is iconic. Congrats to Jumbo-Visma. Sepp Kuss will be fun to watch.

As an avid biker I used to watch religiously. The B.S. with doping and especially Lance Armstrong’s fall from grace, I gave up on it.
Has anything ‘really’ changed or is it still a dope-fest, just covered up better than it was in the past?

Would Americans tune into the World Series if it was the best of 21 games? What about whoever scores the most points out of 21 Super Bowls? Would Americans tune into 21 days of Nascar races (perhaps they might on this one)? While there was no American that was a contender, there were Americans that played some pretty big roles this year. The US has some pretty good young talent.

Emma Norsgaard was forced to leave the race due to head, neck and shoulder injuries
By Chris Bengel Jul 29, 2022 at 11:00 am ET
A huge crash during Stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes on Thursday resulted in one of the race's riders needing to be hospitalized. With about 31 miles remaining in Thursday's stage of the race, there was a huge crush on a stretch of road between Bar-le-Luc and Saint-die-des-Vosges in northeastern France.
That two-person collision eventually led to 30 riders falling off their bicycles.
Stage 5 was delayed for several minutes due to the incident. Many riders suffered minor bumps and bruises, including SD Worx' Chantal van den Broek-Blaak and Italy's Marta Bastianelli. Van den Broek-Blaak was forced to have her right arm bandaged up by the Tour de France medical staff.
The biggest injury was Movistar's Emma Norsgaard, who was forced to withdraw from the stage due to her injuries. Her team announced on Instagram that she "hit her head, neck and left shoulder into a pile-up and had to be transferred to a hospital in Épinal."
On Friday, Movistar announced that the Danish cyclist was undergoing scans for her injuries, but hadn't been diagnosed with any fractures. She'll "remain under medical observation and rest for 24 hours, to monitor any after-effects from the incident."
When riders eventually began racing again, Team DSM's Lorena Wiebes came away victorious. The Dutch cyclist won the longest stage in modern history of women's World Tour racing, which is approximately 109 miles (175.6 kilometers).

Yep, the girls have had me getting up early all week. I was happy to see Cecilie take a stage.
