Sure, but they eschew the prudish rules regarding nudity, loud music, sex, recreational drugs, big bonfires, and things such as that, you know - fun things, and even the gun rules are more recent than not. It's not about "no rules", which is a common misconception regarding the festival, or for that matter libertarian minded people in general.

As RNshooter pointed mention, it used to be much more of a libertarian bent to the whole event. Today of course it's dominated by lefties with ideas of how to take over the world; there's still plenty of libs and some conservatives who go, if anything for the experience however, they keep a low-profile. Up until the last 10-15 years, it was the wild west, no money allowed but, everything else was; not a bad idea however the adults all know that such a 'world' could only exist as the real world allowed it. For a whole week it was every thing from a bartering society, an art enclave, a free fire zone, debachery festival, free concert or, drug haven; everything a libertarian would want. Today, it's popularity has gone global, attendees have to buy tickets (before you just had to find it and show up; you know 4x4 and map/GPS), there's an infrastructure behind it (sanitation, medical (there have been deaths) and security), and its organized; aerial views give you the idea. At it's core, it was all about you being self-sufficient and working with others. When the pics start stream-out, you see there's no way more than half of those in attendance could survive on their own without some modern luxuries and assistance.

Something that used to be cool before "some people" tried to monetize the whole thing.

Sort of like your favorite college radio station thirty years ago before their shit smelled like roses and they dictated what was cool.

Or like a decent, raw, yearly three day music festival maybe used to be. Before coolers and smoking were banned, recording was banned, and you could not get any archived music or images unless you paid for them.

Burning Man used to have a drive-by shooting range when it first moved to the desert. There were explosives and other fun stuff too. Over time it morphed to what it is now. It’s unfortunate that a week of radical self reliance in the desert has morphed from a libertarianish anything goes party to a collection of new age hippie bohos mixed with tech bros playing tourist. It’s not about the art as much as it is about being seen in the scene. There’s a lot of really cool art still but a seven figure “camp” with all of the amenities of the Four Seasons and lobster flown in daily ain’t nothing close to radical self reliance. They should ban RVs but the week has become too big a cash cow. The one upside is SF is almost pleasant with all the clowns at “home” on the playa.

I have to admit getting a few laughs from reading some of the stories in the Reno paper about this year's event.

Organizer's are upset over police traffic stops and drug arrests and threatening to sue.

The #MeToo movement is planning on being out there in force to teach about consent. Really, they're talking about consent at an event which hosts a venue known as The Orgy Dome?

A group from silicone valley brought in an art car made out of a 747 fuselage.

Locals are upset with Burners, "Pooping on the Playa."

High point of the event (for some people). Some very athletic/acrobatic stuff happens. It's a judged event.

Common saying at the event: "Burning Man was so much better, next year". Wink

Honestly, the census shows that 50% of the ticket holders are there for the first time, year after year. Consequently, it is impossible to say what's going to happen or what it will be like. Half the people are brand new and bring their own ideas (good and bad) of what it is and should be.
It's a giant social experiment, full of epic wins and even more epic fails.

Just go. You may hate it. Come back and tell us all about it.

Bruce
