The Real ID Act was initially passed in 2005, to go into effect in 2008. Then enforcement was pushed back to 2014, then 2018, then 2020, then 2023, and it's now been rescheduled to go into effect in 2025, twenty years after the law was first passed... And I'm not holding my breath for 2025.

From https://www.nwahomepage.com/ne...e-another-two-years/

quote:
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced it was extending the deadline by roughly two years for air passengers to use a REAL ID when traveling.

The agency announced on Monday it will begin enforcing the more stringent identification requirement on May 7, 2025, after previously setting a deadline of May 3, 2023. The announcement marks DHS’s third extension.

REAL ID-compliant documents, which are generally signified by a small star, are already required for people to enter certain restricted federal facilities.

“DHS continues to work closely with U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories to meet REAL ID requirements,” Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement.

“This extension will give states needed time to ensure their residents can obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card,” he added. “DHS will also use this time to implement innovations to make the process more efficient and accessible. We will continue to ensure that the American public can travel safely.”

The U.S. began moving toward the requirement after lawmakers passed a law in 2005 establishing minimum security standards for driver’s licenses and identification documents.

The law came in response to a recommendation by the 9/11 Commission and seeks to implement additional anti-counterfeiting and anti-fraud measures.

Once the deadline passes, travelers 18 years and older will need a REAL ID-compliant identification document to pass through the nation’s airports.

The requirement was set to go into effect in 2020, but the agency began granting extensions as the pandemic shut down Departments of Motor Vehicles and other identification-issuing agencies.

Monday’s announcement marks the third extension of the requirement’s expansion to air travel.

DHS first granted an extension until October 2021 before issuing a second extension to May 2023, making the latest announcement the longest extension yet of roughly two years.

Frankly I don't think it's ever going to happen, by the time they figure out a real deadline, some other tech will have replaced what they are trying to do.

The requirements are too stringent for most people and they end up just giving up. I have no idea where my original birth certificate is, this is what's keeping me from getting it. That and having to deal with surly miserable government employees and long lines.

My father in law was recently denied getting his as one of the two forms of ID he had showed a middle name and the other didn't and they wouldn't accept them.

And here's another factoid about this "Real ID" thing.

They demand a birth certificate, but if you bring one, they reject it. They don't want a birth certificate, they want a COLB (certificate of live birth) that's been certified.

When you call them on it, they tell you it's just the way it is.

And no, I don't have a Real ID and never will. I'll use a passport card if it comes to that.

When Michigan implemented it, the list of documents you needed to get it done was ridiculously extensive. Took me forever to gather them all up. Went to the SOS office to get it done and wouldnt you know it? Mad They never looked at any of it, just my drivers license.
What a joke. On me, of course!

They looked at my state stamped birth certificate and a second person asked me like two questions. This was to get my Michigan Enhanced DL to go to Canada. Very simple process and barely more involved than an ordinary renewal.

And I have ordered new copies of my birth certificate a number of times. My birth state issues fancy looking ones too. Car titles look similar though.

Super easy in TX, my NC DL was a Real ID. But TX wanted a copy of birth certificate & any from a list of a bunch of things…my NCDL worked along with my passport.

I think I used SS card and Passport, so I have mine.

I also have my original Dr. Signed birth certificate and certified true copies. Might have used that, can't remember it was a few years ago.

Since 9/11 there hasn't been one hijacking of a commercial airliner that I can remember. Seems what we are doing now is working, without REAL ID.

Thanks but I'll pass on a national ID card.

Don't have one, don't want one and won't get one

I got mine easily about six years ago, at the DMV when my driver's license was renewed.
Since I didn't have a passport, I figured I'd get that for my Id.

They made me get a new Social Security Card.

Mine was laminated since I got it decades ago.

They would not take it.

Had to get one not laminated.

Stupid, they took the laminated card and used it as my license number when I got my original license.

In 2015 my older bro flew from TPA to LAX with a Walter P22 and a loaded mag in his backpack.

When he got there he realized how bad that was and mailed it back to himself in TPA.

TSA is smoke and mirrors….kabuki theatre. If I wanted to get a nylon stabby stick on a plane I could do it and run it right thru their X-ray machines. I won’t go into how. It’s not hard.

The Israeli’s have safe flying down pat…1. No door to the pilots, 2. Background checks on passengers before they fly, 3. Trained personnel in the airport to profile (insert F your feelings here) everyone.

When I fly I worry more about a passenger who wears sweats a shower cap and flops/slides freaking out about her lack of masks, than the “safety” TSA provides.

If REAL ID can be further delayed, why is it needed?

BY SHELDON H. JACOBSON, PH.D., OPINION CONTRIBUTOR - 12/12/22 1:45 PM ET

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced yet another delay in requiring Real ID identification to board commercial flights. The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005, based on the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation. It sets a standard for identification cards issued by states, including driver’s licenses.

The documentation required to get a REAL ID is more extensive than a simple ID. These include proof of identity, date of birth and U.S. citizenship or lawful status, your full social security number, residency and written signature. This means that any person unable to provide such documentation will be unable to secure a REAL ID and potentially be unable to fly commercially.

Since that law was enacted, there have been an endless series of delays. The last few delays (from Oct. 1, 2020, to Oct. 1, 2021, to May 3, 2023) were attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. The most recent delay moved the requirement out to May 7, 2025.

If such an identification verification standard is critical to secure the nation’s air space and air travel, as well as access to federal buildings, why are these delays being tolerated?

The COVID-19 pandemic certainly created headwinds for rolling out REAL ID driver’s licenses and other forms of identification, as access to state Department of Motor Vehicle offices were problematic. Having a cascading sequence of delays is putting into question how seriously identity verification is being taken by the DHS...

Yeah, my state totally revamped the system, established new "centers" for real ID, hired a ton of employees, and still deny most applications. They gave me a two hour ration of shit, so I went to the Post Office and renewed my passport. They required the old passport, photos, and some cash. Fuck real ID.

A couple of years ago when I need to renew my DL, I figured I would just go and get the Real ID. The closest location was about 1hr away. So I went out early Saturday morning figuring if I get there before they open I should have no problem. The line went around the building. I turned around and drove home. Roll Eyes

So when I renewed my passport I just got a passport card with it.

Real ID has been available in WV for @10 years now. I’ve had mine for several years now, almost from the start of availability.

A couple years ago, when my wife's driver's license came up for renewal, they recommended taking the appropriate documents to the DL centre & get a Real ID. I decided that it might not be a bad idea for me to get one too in case there was a family emergency & we'd need to fly somewhere.

I didn't have a birth certificate, so I had to apply to the State Dept of Health to get a copy of mine. It came quickly, but it said that I was a female. I'm not.

I called them & a lady looked it up, and sure enough, the records from XX Hospital had me as female. She said that I had to submit form xxxx, along with notarised copies of a whole bunch of other documents, and THEY'D decide IF a mistake had been made. I hung up.

Soooo, anyway.......I took the Birth Certificate identifying me as a female to the DL center, got my picture taken and was issued a Real ID driver's license. No questions asked. I couldn't resist stopping at the new gender neutral bathroom on the way out.

So much for the increased national security of having Real ID.
