DH - Designated Hitter. In the NL, the pitcher hits, in the AL, the DH hits for the pitcher.

There is talk that the MLB is mandating the DH for both conferences next year.

I know what DH is, but I too was curious about that particular DH. He's a commie?

No. Baseball purists, such as KevinCW, Big Grin believe that the DH is an abomination to the game of baseball. I do too.

Thus, any organization or people who support the DH rule are called communists. And they are!

I got a huge kick watching Greinke smack hits for the Astros this weekend.

Then last night he even gets called in to pinch hit.

Unfortunately, if the MLB turds get their way, this will be the last season of pitchers hitting. Truly sad.

An abomination indeed. FDH.

I am a converted commie. I was once like most of you, thinking the DH was an abomination that killed strategy and bastardized the game. No more. Let pitchers focus on pitching and let hitters hit. I am tired of watching non competitive at bats by pitchers who have no interest in being in the box. I hope they pass the universal DH when the collective bargaining agreement is revisited this off season.

Agreed it should be abolished.
So much more interesting strategy when the pitcher has to hit.
Never liked the the AL and never liked the Astros jumping leagues. Frown
I also got a kick out of Zach Greinke pinch hitting ~ it reminded me of the old days when Bob Gibson a spectacular pitcher and decent hitter would do it.

There are nine fielded players and they should all be allowed to hit - just ask Babe Ruth what happens when a pitcher is required to hit. Razz

Ruth was a unicorn playing against plumbers and electricians who played baseball in their spare time. Razz

He also played outfield and first base on the days he didn’t pitch so he could hit as the DH didn’t exist in his era.

What makes pitchers so special {queue in the SNL Church Lady}?

Let the catcher catch ..... etc

Confused

Not a fan of the DH either and pulling for the Braves. However, I do like Zach Greinke a lot - he's one unique character Greinke

There is not another player on the field who absolutely sends it 100 times in a single game every time they play. So no other player on the field has to prepare their body to throw 100 times in a game at near max effort. There are hours per day spent on preparing for and then recovering from it. It is absolutely different.

Shohei Ohtani, Pitcher, DH, RF

Batted .257 w/46HRs this year.

Even more impressive that he isn’t doing it against guys that clean gutters in the off season Cool

On a serious note, what he is doing is insane. He is a special athlete. I think there are more guys that may get the chance to be 2 way players because of what he has done.

Been an Astro fan since the sixties. Saw Hank Aaron hit homers for the Braves when they came to the Astrodome. Watched as Houston went from NL to AL. Much prefer the AL and DH game.
A few pitchers can/could hit, Mad Bum, Mike Hampton, Greinke. And none can do both like Ohtani.
Just glad I don’t have to listen to buck singing the praises of the dodgers. Go ‘Stros!

I much prefer no DH and all of the added strategy that comes along with it. I would like to see a comparison on length of games when comparing DH vs non DH. If there is a major time advantage I might be swayed a little.

I believe this is the first year I can remember where I had no idea who was in the World Series.

Whatever they do, it needs to be uniform across the MLB. Having one league use a DH and the other league not makes for a lopsided home field advantage for the non DH league when they play each other.

You get guys up to the plate in the World Series, pitchers, who have had literally zero at bats all season. You have DH’s being put out in the field to play a position for the first time all season. It’s much easier to transition from no DH to DH for a couple of games than vice versa, giving the NL a big advantage in a 7 game inter-league series.

Greinke was one heck of a high school baseball player, and he pitched and played a number of infield positions. I think he still holds some of the hitting records at Apopka High School. Yep, its time to ditch the DH.
