I'm sure they have top men working on it right now. Top. Men. Until then, all romaine lettuce from any source on the planet in whatever form is verboten.

How the fuck do they do that in the first place?

How does a fraction, of a fraction, of a fraction, of a fraction of one-tenth of one percent of the population of those 11 states getting sick somehow generate a health warning???

Am I missing something?

I would imagine hospitals have to send a report somewhere about the cases they have. Then if all of them were connected to Romaine lettuce and if samples of those lettuce tested positive for e.coli, that would be a clue.

What's missing for me is they didn't identify where the lettuce came from unless it all comes from one supplier which I don't know.

Yeah, I can see that.

However...

Were talking about 32 people out of fifty or sixty million people (give or take one or two). Only 32 people ate romaine lettuce? Who else ate romaine lettuce and didn't get sick? If they didn't get sick how do you link the 32 that did (especially across eleven states) and then make the claim all romaine lettuce everywhere is contaminated.

If nothing else identifying the offending vegetable under such circumstance is an amazing feat of government efficiency. Who knew the CDC, of all agencies, had it in 'em.

You do NOT want to get E. coli O157. Bloody diarrhea would be getting off light.

I've worked with lots of federal agency scientists and regulators over the past 25 years, CDC are the good guys, they are not regulators, and they work their asses off to protect public health.

Not saying you should eat or avoid romaine lettuce, but since it is not cooked, and who cooks lettuce, make an informed choice.

Okay, I see your point. And it's a good point about how there would have been more than 32 people who ate romaine lettuce and not gotten sick.

But, now, it makes me think of something the CDC can and should do. Publish a list of people with flu, pneumonia, etc. so I can know who to avoid being in close proximity to or, worse, be in physical contact.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." From the article linked in the OP:

"Scott Gottlieb, commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, said the looming Thanksgiving holiday weighed on the minds of federal officials as they prepared the food alert.

“I think we felt increased pressure to try to communicate earlier and more substantively with the public given that we know people are going to sit down for holiday meals,” Gottlieb said."

That's the logic used in determining whether or not to issue a warning? He seems to be saying on any given day most people in this country are going to eat and we wouldn't have warned them until we had better information, but because of Thanksgiving, we warned people before we had a clue.

My wife loves salads so she’s constantly eating lettuce. I told her that the healthy foods will kill her and with all the lettuce contamination issues I may end up being correct.

Not surprising. The people picking the lettuce come from third world countries and there aren't a lot of bathrooms with sinks in the fields for their restroom breaks.

A few months ago, they had another "Don't eat the Romaine" alert, yet Publix continued to sell it, all the local restaurants where I ate put it in their salads and the alert just seemed to go away.

I'm thinking Para is right, the CDC is really a joke.
