Looks like another E. coli outbreak with romaine lettuce.

Link to full story

Romaine lettuce is unsafe to eat in any form, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday in a broad alert in response to a new outbreak of illnesses caused by a particularly dangerous type of E. coli contamination.

The CDC told consumers to throw away any romaine lettuce they may already have purchased. Restaurants should not serve it, stores should not sell it, and people should not buy it, no matter where or when the lettuce was grown. It doesn’t matter if it is chopped, whole head or part of a mix. All romaine should be avoided.

The CDC alert, issued just two days before Americans sit down for their Thanksgiving dinners, reported that 32 people in 11 states have become sick from eating contaminated romaine. Of those, 13 have been hospitalized, with one patient suffering from a form of kidney failure. No deaths have been reported.

The origin of the outbreak is unknown and remains under investigation. The CDC did not limit the warning to romaine from any particular agricultural area...

All three outbreaks — the current one, the one from Yuma and the one from last year — are caused by contamination of E. coli O157:H7. It produces a Shiga toxin that can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. Until the 1990s, most E. coli cases in humans came from eating contaminated hamburger. In more recent years, after reforms in the livestock industry, the outbreaks have been most often associated with leafy greens.

Dang. I have a head of romaine in the fridge that I was planning to serve with dinner tonight. Looks like we’ll be having frozen veggies instead.

No problem. Just wash it with bleach water then boil it for at least fifteen minutes before serving it and you should be good to go.

I just knew it. This confirms my suspicions. The Beautiful Girl has been trying for years to kill me with vegetables.

I don't like Romaine lettuce. I only eat Iceberg. It's also a leafy vegetable and probably not safe to eat, but I do. (Only in restaurants-I don't keep it at home.)

So 32 people, not 31, or 33 but 32 people...across 11 states got ebola err...I mean ecoli, out of how many tens upon tens of millions and the CDC has narrowed it down to romaine lettuce in any form.

How the fuck do they do that in the first place?

How does a fraction, of a fraction, of a fraction, of a fraction of one-tenth of one percent of the population of those 11 states getting sick somehow generate a health warning???

Am I missing something?

I would imagine hospitals have to send a report somewhere about the cases they have. Then if all of them were connected to Romaine lettuce and if samples of those lettuce tested positive for e.coli, that would be a clue.

What's missing for me is they didn't identify where the lettuce came from unless it all comes from one supplier which I don't know.

We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual."
