I never shared the name of the insurer in my roofing saga thread. However, since it's done and over with I'll publicly state is was State Farm.

My attorney won for me, and I paid $10k less overall out of pocket than I would have had they actually honored my policy when I made the claim (i.e. they got to eat the depreciation). Additionally, they received the priviledge of paying for my attorney, their attorney, my appraisers, their appraisers (yes, plural), etc.

To quote my attorney on the day the first of two big checks arrived, "it's actually a pretty good policy once you have an attorney. I personally have State Farm."

Exact same thing happened to a neighbor, huge hail storm, every roof in the neighborhood was getting replaced and State Farm told him no. One Attorney later and they covered it all, plus deductible, attorney fees on both sides, appraisers, adjusters etc... A $20K roof cost them $150K easy.

Around here, State Farm has well-earned their reputation for not paying claims.

I am going through this right now, but with a different company. Sadly, it is a company I paid a higher premium to because of their reputation for paying claims.

I've had USAA auto insurance for over 30 years. I've gotten a dividend almost every year. I just apply it towards my premiums.

I got 2 emails at the same time. A 3rd email came hours later. When I first read the emails, I thought it was a scam because they were listing Zelle, PayPal, Venmo as payment options. I logged into my State Farm Account to confirm they were legit. I used the links provided from the State Farm website to submit my information.

News feed came across my phone today that State Farm internal documents revealed they had changed coverage definitions for mid-west storms, with no notice to customers, and as a result pocketed $1.4B extra income. A quick Google search confirmed it.

For what time period ? I just started with them in January. Insurance in Florida is a joke. Has been with usaa for house and cars but when my son turned 16 they wanted like 1200 per 6 months just for his ‘99 truck that may not even be worth that much, liability only. So I found somebody else for 600 and then last year they didn’t want to play ball when a State Farm agent I knew said they were reducing rates in January. So I switched again and State Farm was even less for 6 months. All the while staying with USAA on the house. I got a $500 dividend from usaa this summer they nicely applied to my balance owed.

Anyway. Free money is free money. I say the insurance company should keep it and backfill the hurricane fund. Becuaee it will happen. Not if but when.

I got the checks in the mail the same day with my license plate renewal.

They were within $5 of each other.

I had USAA when I moved to FL and when I went to buy a new car they wanted almost as much as the car payment to insure it along with my 99 Isuzu Trooper that I only had liability on. And that was before I added my son to the policy.

With State Farm I pay about half of what USAA wanted for the above and now I have two new cars with full coverage and with my son on the policy.

Thanks for this. Got the email(s) this morning and surely would have assumed it was a scam. Especially since I dumped SF as an auto insurer when I bought the F250.

Since I don't do PayPal/Venmo/Zelle, I'll be pleasantly surprised when the checks arrive as I'll long since have forgotten about it.

I received 3 emails, one for each auto policy

Refunds totaled to be apx $100

And I requested mailed check payments within 60 days.

It appeared you could not opt into any form of payment and they would send checks out eventually, but I didn’t trust that.

I too got the State Farm email and thought for sure it was a scam and no way was I clicking the link in the email!

I Googled it and saw it seemed true so I went directly to the State Farm website and saw it was posted there and went through the steps. Now waiting for check. I will get close to $250. I was surprised that my agent even called me to let me know about it.

I got an email from State Farm about this dividend about 3 days before this thread was started, and like others I thought it smelled like a phishing scam. But maybe not, now. Although it does say it's for auto policy holders, not homeowners. So I guess I'll go ahead and submit the information and see what happens.

A week later I got another email saying that my homeowners' premium is going up $80 over last year. Which, judging by what I'm hearing from other areas, is pretty good. But if my dividend payment ends up being $80, I'm going to be real suspicious. Wink

I've been with State Farm for a lot of years and they've always been good about paying claims. Not that I'm made a lot of them, but those I have made were always paid in short order. And for the last 2 or 3 renewal cycles my auto premiums have actually gone down.
