As the title says, Turning_gal took a carving class at the John C. Campbell Folk School a few months back and really took to the craft of power carving.

The images below are her first attempt at carving a Chickadee! She found a root in the yard and used it as a perch on a turned base.

For her first try she did remarkably well, I'm seriously proud of her. She watched a carver from South Florida on youtube and followed every step. She is so excited now to proceed with another bird and then on to bigger birds....

You go girl....

Coming from someone with absolutely no artistic talent, I think the bird is incredibly lifelike and beautiful. Very impressive.

Just curious-how long did it take her to carve the bird?

That's awesome work, and not just for a first try. I've always admired people who could craft things with their hands.

A lot of skill, care, and time went into it... It truly is an attractive and eye-catching piece!

Is it all one piece or is the bird a separate piece from the root?

Turning_gal. Does your forum name have anything to do with this marvelous and impressive skill?
