Turning, as in a lathe?

While she may have been working with wood for some time, to produce that on her first try means she has inherent talent. Smile

TG, that is fantastic! Your eye for proportion and detail is amazing! How long does something like that take to do?

Yes, we are both full time woodturners, almost any thing round. Here's her Etsy store, just to give you and idea of her talents. There is some of my work as well, mostly the salt and pepper mills and some of the urns; Link

Very nice!

My grandmother was a world class decorative miniature carver. Spent many a weekend in my youth at carving competitions. We always had plenty of them to go to. Probably didn’t hurt that the Ward Foundation is headquartered on our Eastern Shore and so the big World Show is held in Ocean City every year.

I went a few years ago just for kicks and sadly, it’s a mere shadow of what I remember. Not enough young carvers to keep things going the way they were, it seems. I have neither the artistic ability, nor the patience to burn in all the damned feathers.

Biggest show around here these days is the Easton Waterfowl Festival in the fall. You all aren’t far and should really come up here and check it out. Let me know if you do.

I have some professionally done bird carvings and hers are the equal... perhaps better than a couple!

Thank you all for the amazingly positive comments and ideas!
The carving took several hours a day for days on end. Floyd Scholz, a wildfowl master-carver taught the daily lessons. The branch is separate and glued together. Then you still have to paint the bird convincingly.
I hope to combine the woodturning with carvings.
Currently a small falcon is in the works.

Thanks Para, she took a class on power carving leaves and flowers, that kicked off her quest to learn bird carving. She hopes to get to a spot where she can sell her work or incorporate it into some of our cremation urns.
