Video appears to show WPD patrol car spinning on ice
JANUARY 22, 2022 BY WECT

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A video circulating on social media pages including Instagram appears to show a Wilmington Police Department patrol car intentionally sliding in circles in a slippery parking lot during this weekend’s ice storm.

WECT reached out to WPD for comment and received the following statement: “We have launched an internal investigation and this is now a personnel matter. At the conclusion of this investigation, we will take the appropriate action based on all the facts. Thank you to all that have brought this matter to our attention.”

The names of the officers involved have not been released.

Why is anyone bothered by this and why is this news??

There is no better training for driving on slick surfaces than to actually get out and drive on a slick surface. Better to get a good understanding of how your vehicle reacts in the ice and snow in a parking lot than out in traffic.

Everybody should do this.

My old department…they’ll probably get slapped.

Oh for the days before GPS and damned cameras in everyone’s pocket. It used to be a fun job.

No kidding. So do people get upset when officers take driving skills courses on tracks sprayed down with water. This guy was practicing for free putting no one in danger.

I used to take my EMS rig to a Walmart parking lot to practice, and later on I would take my squad car to the local high School parking lot.
No one cared.

Many years before that, my police pursuit driving course included two 10 hour days on a skid pan, using both RWD and FWD vehicles to learn the differences in behavior, culminating in pursuing the instructors around the pan through coned off obstacles. A clean sheet was necessary to progress in the course.

Better to slide there and learn to control it, than out on the road.

After learning, the hard way, 4WD vehicles don't handle the same ways as either RWD or FWD, I took said 4WD vehicle to a large, empty parking lot, directly after a decent snowfall, to learn it.

If I saw a cop doing what was described I'd assume they were doing the same.

Totally agree. My High School Driver's Ed course in the early 60s involved just such drills on a frozen lake. Really got to appreciate how a rear wheel drive car handled on such surfaces.

Same here - actually it was an ice covered parking lot, and the very first time we ever got behind the wheel. Granted that was probably improvised on his part, making the best of bad weather, but it proved valuable many times especially in college in the NY north country.

Used to practice donuts etc with my friends at night in empty parking lots, atleast you used to know how to handle a car in snow. I see no problems with that video

I got caught once doing donuts in the snow in a large parking lot by the police. I was 17 with my girlfriend in the car.

The cop told me to move out further as there were those cement parking blocks and to make sure I didn’t hit one and bend a rim. He just wanted me to be safe but didn’t stop the fun.

Ah how times have changed.

I learned how to drive in the snow by going to vacant lots and intentionally losing control to learn how to slow down and regain control safely.

Whenever I buy a new vehicle I put it through the same test. Knowing the vehicle's limitations has allowed me to stay well within them.

In the older Crown Vic days, you could tell who had been having fun because the rear steel wheels would end up packed with snow in the centers. Only seemed to happen when the car was going sideways... They redesigned the brakes in the mid-2000s and the accompanying wheels had a greater offset and were thus flatter to the outside. Helped hide the evidence.

I had engaged in the same thing many times in personal vehicles as well as the my various patrol vehicles over the years. The patrol rigs include a Plymouth Fury, full sized Bronco (92), Chevy Lumina, Cherokee, gen 1 Durango, 3/4 ton Chevy PU, Crown Vics, Tahoes, and 2 gens of Interceptor SUV’s. It was the best possible way to see what they would do on unsure footing.

Seems the law these days, can’t do anything without someone coming down on them. Christ, give ‘em a break they’re just trying to do their jobs (and a most thankless one at that lately).
