Well, a king is not a “highness” he is a “majesty.” Harry or William are “Your Royal Highness” and Charles is “Your Majesty.”

British protocol ranges from stuffy to just polite. As an American, you could address them as someone in a position of authority that you respect and not raise an eyebrow. However, it never hurts to be polite to people and respect their customs.

Love or hate the concept of monarchy, he's a head of state. "Good morning/afternoon/evening, sir" is probably safe.

Protocol with his mother was "Your Majesty" on first meeting, then "Ma'am."

Planning to meet the man, or curiosity?

Interesting that The Donald and Charles III (not one hundred and eleven), are related. 15th cousins.

"How's your spaniel?"

Or, given his weird conversations with his then mistress, Camilla Parker Bowles:

"How's it hanging, your tamponess."

A lot of us are probably 15th cousins. I’m pretty sure I’m my own 15th cousin at least once.
