We are going to have a full house for Thanksgiving and I am looking for some good ham recommendations.

I seem to remember a few here from the past but cannot find them.

Honeybaked is probably best value, nothing wrong with it at all, solid.

Two holiday's ago, we splurged for something special and got a D'Artagnan Berkshire Pork Bone-In Spiral Ham. It was pretty damn good, nice balance of porky salt and sweet.

And some say this is also very good, but I have never tried one.

I really like the Kirkland brand hams at Costco.

They have a very tasty honey baked ham as well as a very rich Black Forrest Ham.

THIS, Honey Baked are the best hams I've ever had. I buy them and there's no need to tie up the oven heating them or anything, which is preciously needed to cook the Thanksgiving Turkey or side dishes. Around the holidays you can always find good coupons for honey bakes.

I've also had the ones from GFS and Costco that you have to heat with the sugar packet to put on top, they're almost as good as Honey Baked, but a pain in the ass because you have to baste and bake them.

My son's high school baseball teams sells Honeybaked hams (and gift cards to Honeybaked Ham Store) as their fundraiser every fall. This is usually a few hundred hams a year. I don't think there has been a single complaint about taste, quality, etc.. The hams purchased by my extended family have all been been great.

If you want the very best old fashioned Virginia ham or other pork products, check out Edwards Virginia Smokehouse. They are a bit pricey.

Boar's Head hams are quite good.

Who are we fooling? Almost all ham is pretty damn good.

Another vote for Costco/Kirkland. No sweat no strain. Very consistent too.

PS: To go with it, their scalloped potatoes are freakin' awesome.

I agree with both of these statements. Boar's Head Black Forest hams make awesome sandwiches and I can't think of any ham I've had that I would call bad.

We get the Honeybaked Hams evrery couple of years and they are "okay" IMO, but only because they are so different from the other hams from Publix or Costco.

But thanks to Jim Shugart and corsair we've now found Edward's and D'Artagnan's sites and the hams on there really look good. Really good is an understatement, I think, though we haven't purchased yet.

We plan to purchase one for Thanksgiving (just the two of us and the dog so probably a small one) and then, in mid-December, I am hosting a Men's group from our Church one evening and was hoping to find an alternative to Pizza. I'll order another ham for that.

I guess, when you get older you tend to get excited about different things than you did when you were a bit younger and I confess, when I saw these two sites last evening, I got excited.

Thanks again to Jim and corsair.

Bob

Nueskes makes a great ham, but I don't think its radically better than Costcos. Hell, Nueskes' makes great everything but you are paying for it, and IMHO ham is one of those things that with the right homemade glaze quality is hard to justify paying for.

Smithfield was purchased by a Chinese company. Never again will I buy a Smithfield product. Hell, I wouldn't take a Smithfield product now if they were giving them away.
