I wouldn’t normally be the type to ask for this, but as all the fathers here know when it’s your kiddo you’ll do anything.

My 6 y/o daughter (Emmie) started complaining about left leg pain last night. She’s historically had some pretty bad growing pains so at the time we didn’t think much of it. Fast forward to this morning and she couldn’t move the leg without some pretty severe pain and the ensuing tears. Luckily we got in to the pediatrician during their Saturday morning hours. They did some blood work and now we’re at the children’s ER waiting on an MRI to confirm if we’re dealing with septic arthritis in her hip like they suspect.

This little girl has been a trooper all day fighting through the pain and the anxiousness. I’m just ready to have an answer and a game plan on how we get her better.

If you would just think some good throughs for her tonight and hug your own kiddos extra tight.

Update 1 - 00:45 7/2
MRI confirmed it as septic arthritis in her hip. Going in for surgery early this AM to clean it out and start of IV antibiotics afterwards. Doctors make it sound so normal and routine, but again as a parent you worry regardless. I’ll update again later in the day. Thank you to all for the thoughts and prayers!

Update 2 - 7:30 7/2
Wife relieved me overnight. Emmie went into surgery about 5:30 this morning wherein they drained the joint and went in and cleaned out the infection. She’s recovering and prognosis looks good. More IV antibiotics and testing to ensure the infection is gone but she should be released in 2-3 days.

Thank you again to everyone for the kind thoughts and prayers.

Update 3 - 12:30 7/3
Well yesterday saw some good improvements, her appetitive was back and she was able to get up under her own power with the assistance of a walker. No use/weight bearing on her left leg until the drain tube comes out which will be dictated by CRP markers in tomorrow mornings blood test. Her cheerful self has returned though and she’s more talkative with the nurses and blabbering away to my wife and I. Last night was good, she slept most of the night with only the usual nursing round interruptions. Hoping for more of the same today and really hoping we might get lucky with a late discharge on the 4th, but more realistically it’ll likely be the 5th.

Sounds as though you're at Wesley (yeah, I live in Wichita), I've always been impressed with the treatment they offer there. I'm sorry about your daughter's situation and I hope she comes through this alright.

Mine are 6 and 9. I’ve been there and it REALLY sucks.

I’m hoping everything turns out just fine.

I’m a notorious softy. When it comes to little children suffering, I redouble my efforts to help and protect them. Of course she and you will be the subjects of our prayers.

I described it to Mrs DF. She says if it is septic arthritis, there’s treatment for her.
