The digitizer is locking up from time to time. That's probably only going to get worse. What do I want to upgrade to? I'm partial to iPhones, but I haven't researched the different offerings. I'm on ATT, if that matters...

6 se if you can find one. Same size, just upgraded processor and can run the new OS I should be tall and rich too; That ain't gonna happen either

If you like the size, an SE is the same size as the 5s just with better camera, processor etc If you want to go up a size to what IMO is the perfect iPhone size, you should look for a deal on a 7 or 8 as they are trying to clear that inventory with all the “X” iPhones out now.

Actually, I'm seriously considering one of the new phones offered by ATT. I'm upgrade eligible (not that it really means anything these days). They have: 6S Plus 8 8 Plus I'm really not interested in the X. I have no need to stay on the bleeding edge as I get older. So...what sayeth the SIGForum Oracle on these three choices?

I made the leap last July from my first (failing) iPhone 5 to android Galaxie 9+; wonderful for a lot of reasons. Still don't use a lot of the potential but very happy with such as magnificent camera & other features. Granted it's crazy to pay so much for such a device, yet 20 years ago it was a sci-fi gizmo. **************~~~~~~~~~~ "I've been on this rock too long to bother with these liars any more." ~SIGforum advisor~ "When the pain of staying the same outweighs the pain of change, then change will come."~~sigmonkey

The biggest problem I see with "upgrading" is I am spoiled to carrying my phone in my back left pocket. The newest iPhone offerings are gonna push that envelope. I am on ATT's website RIGHT NOW, and I'm leaning towards the standard 8....any reason to get the 8Plus other than screen size? any of them will be bigger than my 5S

The 8 Plus can do a few camera tricks that the 8 cannot, due to the fact that it has a second camera on the back. If your camera isn't the most important feature for your phone, you'd be well served by the iPhone 8. The iPhone 8 Plus also gets better battery life due to its increased size, but the 8 had no trouble lasting me through the day unless I was watching a bunch of video on it.

I would also give the iPhone XR a look, seeing as how it's only $50 more than the iPhone 8 Plus. It has a much bigger screen in a smaller package and with light use, the iPhone XR can last me 3 days without having to charge it.

I just ordered the XR. My 5 will be a music player in my truck. I did not want to spend the money, but I figure the 5s days are numbered. End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

Can't talk about iPhones because I've never had one, nor do I necessarily want one. But big phones (up to a point) I can comment a bit about. My prior Android HTC One was about the same size as your 5S. I thought it was the perfect size, still do. It had a horribly unreliable camera due to a chipset that over time became increasingly vulnerable to heat buildup, something smartphones always generate. Its replacement is my Galaxy 7 Edge, significantly larger in size to the HTC. I thought for sure I was going to pay the price for being seduced by the Samsung's slinky looks but I adjusted. I've long used folio/flip cover cases with my phones and their protective capability has allowed me to carry in my off-hand (left) front pocket right along with other 'stuff' that normally can damage the phone. Only downside is that they make things a bit more awkward in taking pictures because of the cover flap, but I'm not some snapshot maniac with my phone anyways. I carried in that pocket with all of my past phones and despite its larger size I continue to do so with the Galaxy. And it's not all that bad. Now that it's getting on in age (4 years come May) and doesn't hold a charge as well as it's once did, I've been preparing to make the change to the next generation 5G hardware, which more than likely will mean that it'll be larger still. But given how well the 7 Edge has carried without me needed to go to some sort of cargo pants wardrobe I feel quite confident that my next phone will be nearly was easy to haul around in that pocket as well. I suspect that as long as you've got a good case around your chosen iPhone, you should be able to continue to carry it in the same place that you have carried your past phone.

Didn't they show there's actually nothing wrong with older iphones and it's just apple intentionally slowing them down to force people into upgrading?

There was some stink about that. Apple claimed "battery life". But this is an actual hardware problem, not a slow down. My digitizer (touch screen) locks up, and I have to twist the phone to get it back on. Plus I'm probably nearing EOL on support.

Apple claimed that was software intentionally reducing power consumption on phones with older, weaker batteries. In response to the complaints, accusations and outrage they did two things: 1. Added "battery health" to the battery info and 2. Offered half-price battery replacement until the end of 2018. I never saw any slow-down on my 6S, but battery health said the battery capacity was down to 87%, so I took advantage of the half-price battery replacement. hudr, unless eyesight is a problem with a "smaller" phone, I'd tend to stick with something the size of a 6S, 8 or Xr. Much more pocketable. I'd like to have an Xr, but, particularly with the recent stock market plunge, it ain't in the cards for me. So I'll continue to be happy with my 6S. You can look to Swappa for good deals, if you want to save a buck of two. I think I got my 6S off eBay. My wife's 6S and my Apple Watch from Swappa. Those latter two were both so new they still had months of Apple warranties left on them. "America is at that awkward stage. as much as my vanity would like to overlook it, eyesight is becoming an issue. I'm a firm believer that my generation was responsible for the phones getting smaller and smaller, and now also responsible for the phones getting bigger as we age.

The SE is an iPhone6 on the inside but in a iP5 case size. I got a nearly new copy on swappa for $130 delivered. And a "mint" copy for another for $140 delivered. As long as the SIM card is the same, you could do the swap yourself.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on an iPhone XR. Barring any major mishaps, I’ll have it long past the last payments.

bigger government = smaller citizen |
I just bought one of those for my wife and while the size is larger than her 6S, she likes that it's bigger (she does a lot of facebook, zillow, and email on her phone). No issues with the face ID, although I DID warn her about keeping it in her back pocket all the time. If she sits on it and it starts to bend at all, she's going to have big problems, and it won't be with just her phone. I buy the phones outright because I won't lease jack squat from those j-holes, and I want her to take good care of it, like she would any other purchase. Wait, what? |
I’d go with a 7. I remember when I had to switch from a 5 to a 6 at work. When I first got it, it felt enormous. In a relatively short time I got used to it and now my same sized 7 feels tiny compared to the rest of my families plus sized devices. Prices have come down on the 7 with the advent of the 8 and X series phones. It’s the same size as the cheaper 6S, but gets a HUGE beneficial jump in water resistance. If an unprotected 6 of any kind gets wet, it’s likely to be toast. There are vids of 7’s on YouTube being immersed in deep water with no case and surviving. Look for a 7. **edit- disregard, saw you got the XR “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

I have an X and love it. If getting one today, I would get the Xr. Don’t get stuck with years-old technology. The X models are water-resistant, fast, have fantastic cameras, bigger screen for the size. The facial recognition works great for me except in the sun, then I just enter the password. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"
