The meat industry as a whole was hit hard during the COVID shutdowns. Many of the meat processing facilities had to shut down for extended periods, which mean excess supply in animals awaiting slaughter, which caused livestock prices to plummet. If you'll recall, many farmers/ranchers were basically giving away their stock back in April/May-ish, since it was costing them more to feed them then they could get for selling them. Some resorted to simply euthanizing and dumping their stock, to limit their losses. As a result, it's easy to see how the ripple effects from that are likely contributing to a shortfall in supply now. I know roast beef, my deli meat of choice, has been very tough to find for going on 6 months now. | |||

Are they going to label it as UK beef? I've eaten at some high-end London steakhouses and it was only mediocre. My friends (as in multiple) who have had expat assignments to the UK say the same thing and go a step further saying the beef is not as good as American beef. Free markets and all that. So, great that our market is open to UK beef. But why? Is there something there like Kobe beef that we can't get here? Somehow, with shipping capacity being somewhat hard to come by, beef being fairly perishable, and the current market situation, I can't imaging it being worth shipping beef from the UK, at present: according to the WSJ (9/20)

We were always going to start raising beef. We moved about 2 years early 2 years ago when all that beef was lost in the midwest floods. The shortage started then, it just took until now to be realized... Of course, processing beef is now at a premium but I think that will sort itself out soon as there are plenty of people who see an opportunity. The corporate meat industry either has to increase production while lowering prices or face new, smaller proecessors getting a firm foothold in the market. Their only other option is to tighten the regulatory process which they are very good at. For us, we know how to butcher a cow. As we do pigs and all poultry. With a cow it is a pain but doable. It is completely legal for me to sell you a cow and you turn around and hire me to teach you how to process it. Is it a dance, yep but in the end we always win... As far as shipping beef, Once it is slaughtered beef has to hang a certain period of time. Easy to have that time be in refrigerated containers on a ship slowly making its' way across the ocean... | |||
