There are no legit plug and play chips available.

There are tuners for the Fords, but Forscan (software I'm assuming he used to unlock the GPS) doesn't have access to the PCM where that data is held.

Yep, on my truck it was already there, just the navigation was not active. It's a 2015 F-150 with the Sync 2 system.

As others have mentioned there is a software package called FORScan that allows owners to read and change code with the onboard computer. Members on he F150 forum have complied a spreadsheet of what can be accomplished with changes to the code. It's not the ECU controlling the engine but things like warning comes, daytime running lights, gauge displays infotainment functions, etc.

I admit I was somewhat intimidated about hacking into my truck and had put off doing it for a while. But following the directions posted on the forum it was very easy. Now i'm browsing their spreadsheets looking for other changes to make.

Are you saying the truck came w/o navigation and you were able to activate it with a new code?

Yep. Well, I did need the SD card that contained the maps.

Yes, everything is already there....as the nav display does other stuff- radio, a/c system, etc.....the $1200 option basically unlocks the map function and gives you the chip with the roads on it (which Ford and other manufacturers have to pay a fee to the mapping company per vehicle).

Hopefully it downloads the current stock codes into a file you can update to the computer in case you screw up a hack, or someones hack ends up being something that messes up the truck down the road...

Welcome to the dark side.

There's definitely some stuff that's a bit more intimidating & $$$ to me.
A few have added the BLIS system to their XLTs, along with the Lariat power folding mirrors.
Involves some wiring harness swaps & a good bit of $ to accomplish.

Same with swapping the smaller 4" XLT gauge cluster for the Lariat & up 8" cluster.

It has the ability to back up each module independently, and the ability to write the saved backup back to the module.

Isn't technology grand, sometimes??

Funny you all bring up vehicle computer programming and the current generation not knowing how to use a timing light or heck even knowing what one is.

I am in process of researching the best way to convert my motor with a distributor ignition system to the donor car that is wired for a distributor less ignition so I can use an aftermarket ECU.

Thus the metric system did not really catch on in the States, unless you count the increasing popularity of the nine-millimeter bullet.
