So I successfully hacked my truck today. Factory navigation was a $795 option from Ford when I bought my truck. After spending $65 on an SD card with the latest maps, downloading and installing a software patch, and changing one number in one line of code in my truck's on-board computer programming, I now have fully functional factory navigation. I have to admit I kind of miss my high school days when making vehicle upgrades required a basic set of mechanic's tools and a timing light. Now it requires a bluetooth enabled OBD-II scan tool, a Windows based laptop and a wifi connection. Am I the only one concerned that there's now an entire generation that has no idea how to use a timing light or re-jet a Holley 4 barrel? This message has been edited. Very timely question. I was reflecting on a very similar question the other day when I came upon some obsolete tools including a pre-inductive sensor timing light which actually required a physical series connection between the plug wire and the plug. Then there were the specialized carburetor and distributor adjusting tools which were all that and made life so much easier at the time.

They are outnumbered by the throngs of folks that do a happy dance when they think about NEVER having to set the dwell on points ever again. I haven't had a vehicle with a carbatooter in ages. I REALLY don't miss jets, float levels and mechanical choke linkage. -------- After the game, the King and the pawn go into the same box.

I've got a barely used Craftsman timing light from the '70s sitting in my garage tool chest. I was just wondering the other day if I'll ever get to use it again. _____________________________ "A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government." This thread made me realize that I need those antique tools to maintain my antique 1947 Chevrolet. I better go find them before they disappear forever. ------- Trying to simplify my life...

Eh... Just the latest generation's version of romanticising the past. Sounds just like my farmer Grandfather, lamenting as how he no longer "got to" harness, feed, and brush down the mule team, after a decade or so using that first farmall tractor. Or my Carpenter Dad, noting that knowing how to sharpen a handsaw is a lost art after a few decades with a Skill Saw. Wonder what the current generation will miss... manually spinning their Fidget spinner, after the advent of powered ones. LOL! As for the carbs, been there also, but I'll take my direct injection Mazda and it's 40 MPG any day! Collecting dust.

I was 12 years old when I rebuilt my first Rochester 4 Jet after my father made a few minor mistakes on re-assembling it the night before we were due to leave on vacation. Yeah, even at that age my Dad would turn to me because I had a real "knack" for taking stuff apart and putting it back together. Today I can still break down a Rochester Quadrajet and put it back together with my eyes closed, a skill that still comes in handy for many Mercruiser powertrains still in use today. As for Timing Lights and Dwell Meters with a 1985 and 1986 GM "G" car in my garage I still need these tools to set the Timing and adjust the Dwell on the Electronic Quadrajet. PS, I was NEVER very impressed with the Holley or Carter Carbs. If you knew what you were doing with the Q Jet you could get more airflow AND better metering across the full throttle and RPM range with a Q Jet. I've stopped counting.

Are you saying the truck came w/o navigation and you were able to activate it with a new code?

Oh how I'd love to do that to my Subaru. I wear my seatbelt. But I generally put it on when rolling a bit. Edit --- Glory be! 3 and a half years and 30 seconds to silence.

Yep. Well, I did need the SD card that contained the maps. My daughter can deflate your daughter's soccer ball.

Sorry for the dumb questions. I'm a retard when it comes to this shit. Does this mean the satellite link is already installed?

It's split the modifying crowd into two camps: mechanical and ECU/code/electronics. I'm about to tear in to our '12 Maxima to correct a problem, removing the upper intake and valve covers. No sensors involved (other than unplugging them, en route to the problem). If it were electronic/code in nature, I'd be taking it to a person who is good at that. However...I don't lament not being able to set points, timing advance, etc. The guys who understand ECU coding can do that a'la carte these days, and make more power, more efficiently, and generally run smoother than I ever could do. It makes my head hurt just thinking about it, so I'll gladly leave that end up to the guys who know how to do it. I'll stick to the mechanical things. Just the way I'm wired. Pun intended. Good on you for jumping in there and doing your own work!

OP, do you have Sync 2 or 3? I have the big white box full of different size holly jets! ___________________________ "I Get It Now" Beth Greene

Guessing he has a 2015 with Sync2 since he added the SD card. Sync3 doesn't use the SD cards for NAV anymore. The Enemy's gate is down.

I hacked my Mazda the other day, disabled the start up warnings and animation. Now it boots up in a couple seconds instead of 15 or 20. Also deleted the locked while moving items. That allows reprogramming the GPS etc while moving, had to stop before to enter a new destination etc... The driver shouldn't be doing anyway, but the passenger being able to do it is handy. I didn't change the background pic or the theme, I wanted to retain the stock appearance, at least until my warranty is out. Mazda just closed the flaw that was being used to hack the software in the latest firmware update. And published a warning that hacking the infotainment system would void the warranty IF the hack caused the problem or bricked the unit. I bet the hackers will find another work around.
