When I was little, I wanted to be a car designer. I drew many cars, engines, frames, wheels, dashboards, and interiors. I wish I was one, still. What career did you dream for yourself, and would gladly still strive to be?

A hospitalization ended my dream of making it through the academy and joining the San Jose Police. That was almost 30 years ago.

On a personal level, I wanted to better husband, father, and friend.

Sadly, today it looks like I fucked at least two of those up.

Professionally, I wanted to be a CIA case officer. I knew many, including one family and one extended family member.

With no college degree, no military experience, and a closet warehouse of skeletons, when there was a tiny, tiny chance (because at that time I was young and had a really strange skill set) I said "no."

I said no because I didn't want the soul crushing experience of the people I most admire saying "no."

They are incredible people.

One of my ambitions was to be catcher for the Yankees, like Yogi Berra.

I read that he could throw someone out trying to steal second without getting out of his crouch. (This may not have been actually true). I worked on that and my catching skills for several years while in Little League. Our team had a catcher, whose dad was one of the coaches, who may still hold the record for passed balls. I knew I could do better than this bozo and finally convinced the Manager to let me try.

Eventually a runner on first tried to steal, and without standing up, I threw the ball right into the right handed batter's ear, knocking him out. This was back in the barbaric '50' before batting helmets. I never played catcher again.

This is just one reason why there are no left handed catchers.

The other hurdles I had to overcome were being slow, skinny and a lousy hitter.

Electrical Engineer or Military officer.
After a circuitous journey including MANY different jobs, I became a degreed Electrical Engineer.
Never solved the static interference problem on AM radio I thought about solving as a kid though.

Frankly, as a child I don't know that I had a particular job in mind that I wanted. I don't remember wanting to be a policeman, fireman, pilot, or anything else.

I think I'm in the majority of controllers who always wanted to be pilots but something always got in the way.

I wish I could be the person my dogs think I am.

For the most part, I'm doing what I wanted to do when I grew up. I took a very different route to get here than I thought I would, and had I taken the original route I'd probably be making 5x the money, but I'd also be living in a major metro and missing out in the simple things like a backyard, a charcoal grill, fishing, shooting, and the like.

Overall, I'm fairly happy, I suppose. Doesn't matter, can't go back and change any of it anyway.

Okay, this sounds stupid, but I always wanted to be a Correctional Officer. I was going to settle for police officer, but a strange twist of fate in the military provided me with the secondary MOS in Corrections. When I got out I went to work for the Bureau of Prisons. I retired 25 years later and now work as an account manager supervising contract corrections officers escorting convicts out for medical treatment. I just love locking people up, I guess.
