Pilot. My childhood home was in the traffic pattern for WPAFB. I spent hours watching the planes.
But, I was too poor a student to get it done.
So I piloted a Crown Vic.

A basketball player, alas I am only 5'7".
I wish now I could eat nothing but jalapeño poppers and hot wings and smoke a pack a day without any ill health effects. Odd dream I guess but I'm happy with everything else.

Astronaut. Then I realized I was just below the cusp of intelligence and not motivated enough. Kind of sad realization, especially at 14-15 years old.

Now, I find myself needing a change in jobs/profession. It is stressful. Not sure if I want to try to continue in a field I know just about everything in or hit the reset button. In late 30's it's quite scary thought.

I wanted to be a Vet, but I hated high school so much, and my grades weren't great, I just tossed the idea away. There are times I really regret not doing it, but other times, I'm glad it worked out the way it did.

The decisions at certain forks in the road got me where I am, and I am quite happy and content.
Like a couple of others, I had delusions of grandeur, that of being a fighter pilot but at about 13 or 14 years old my eyesight quelled that dream and brought me to reality.

I picked up my first camera when I was 7-8 years old, and ever since I wanted to be a professional photographer. I managed to do that for a while, but the dream was much more fun than the job.

I gave it up to go to work in 911 dispatch, and I'll retire from here unless something crazy happens.

I used to be a volunteer fireman and EMT many years ago, so this has always been in my blood too.

Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

A voice actor in the mold of the late Don Messick. If you don't know the name, he did hundreds of voices in Hanna-Barbera cartoons, e.g., various animals including Scooby-Doo and, in his normal voice, Dr. Quest in Jonny Quest. But I have neither the voice(s) nor the talent. Frown I make do with a few voice impressions.

Comic book artist. I'm good at drawing and had offers to art school but never took it seriously. I chose football and fraternity life instead lol. Now I just draw infrequently on my iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil. It's pretty neat actually.

Lawyer. From an early age. Hoped to go to law school, spend several years doing PD/legal aid work on the reservations in AZ and then moving into politics. I still think U.S. Senator is the greatest and best job on the planet. Got married while still in undergrad, never made it to law school. Been dallying in politics my whole life. My profile picture is me speaking on the steps of our state capital.

But I'm still working on the lawyer gig. Took the LSAT last December and planning on entering law school in the fall of 2018.

When I was a kid I wanted to be either a USAF fighter pilot/instructor pilot, specifically the F-4G WILD WEASEL (later the F-15E when they got rid of F-4s) and T-38, or a detective, with a big preference toward being a pilot.

I got into USAF pilot training, but I washed out.

I'm happy with how things turned out, as I have a great life, with friends and family I wouldn't have had I made I through pilot training. Also, I got very lucky, actually got the second choice as I'm now a Fed investigating violent crime, primarily gang related violent crime. There are still some days though when I wonder how life would have turned out if I had done a better job at flight school.

Now the only thing I'd be interested in other than my current job, is being a US District Court Judge. However, it's too late to go to law school, and I'm not politically connected to anyone powerful in either political party. So even if I had gone to law school when I was younger, I'd never get nominated to be a federal judge.

Wow, we should have another thread about this, as to not hijack this one -- but dude, I've seen your posts on electrical stuff, and I know you have deep insight about the topic. It would be a shame to see you leave all that.

The insight you've had on things like GFCI's, Arc fault, grounding to meet code, are spot on, and normally the stuff you get on the internet about these topics is flat wrong.

Raised in the 60s, I wanted to be an astronaut, or at least in the Air Force, but always attracted to the ocean as well.
I graduated high school, joined the Air Force, went to college and became a marine biologist for about 10 years. Got married, had a kiddo, had to make money so switched to my 2nd major and been a lab rat for the duration. No real regrets.

My dream also, nearly verbatim. I also dabbled in comic illustration. I loved to draw, sketch, etc.... freehand or with tools.
Now I mainly just make ends meet at a job I detest.

wanted to be an astronaut and a military pilot

I had an appointment to Royal Military in Kingston but turned it down because I was told it was unlikely I would get an aircrew slot

I applied to be an astronaut and passed the first cut for the Canadian Space Agency but got weeded out pretty quickly

I am happy being an engineer and mathemagician

Army aviation, rotary wing pilot in either a recon or evac role. Seemed more interesting than cobras & Apaches. Army was the only option for flight crew without a commission and 4 years in college.
After that was gonna be state police, law school and either the feebs or the Marshall Service.
Turns out, my eyesight is too poor for either path. So I work a job I hate to get by.

A Perpetual Disappointment...
