That's me in the bow blind having a moment with this young 8-point. Texas requires a 13 inch spread, so I let him enjoy his breakfast and go on about his day.

How do you get them to hold still for the measurement? Seems like it would be like trying to get a six year old dressed in a suit and tie… 0:01

Our deer rifle season doesn't start until next weekend here in Georgia but here are a few doves ready for the frying pan. coloradohunter, do you hunt private or public land for antelope? I have been thinking more about trying to plan a speed goat hunt out west somewhere. Would love to DIY but might just save up for an outfitter. I'm gonna vote for the funniest frog with the loudest croak on the highest log.

Looks like you got him right next door to me! Honestly, I have no idea where you got that pronghorn at, but the background sure looks like around here in SoCo. I see the windmills in the background, so guessing either north, or south of the Palmer divide. They make some excellent jerky if you haven't tried that yet. Congrats! Beautiful antelope - congrats! Our bow season for deer started October 1. I have yet to get out but am planning on being afield all of this coming weekend. Hopefully I'll soon have some photos to share. ----------------------- You can't fall off the floor.

Texas Parks and Wildlife says the best way to estimate in the field is the inside of the antler spread has to be on the outside of a deer's ears when they are extended in the full alert position. I watched him nonchalantly approach from my 8 o'clock position till he was at my 12 o'clock, and the entire time in the early morning light I was trying to figure out legal vs illegal. I didn't feel like calling the Game Warden at 730am on a Sunday because I guessed wrong.

From the picture he looks marginal. Like the on-field call should stand without overwhelming evidence from the replay booth. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

Yep, imo, the real benefit of these rules is more about protecting the marginal deer with a 12" spread who is just one year short of being a good "mature" buck and less about protecting a forkhorn with a 7" spread who is 2+ years away. Then again, there are some pretty good 4 year old deer out there that just simply don't get wide, so it's an imperfect system. I'm gonna vote for the funniest frog with the loudest croak on the highest log.

Howdy amigo. Got him out east of Pueblo about 25 miles. My cousin has 20,000 acre ranch I used to work on as a kid. Jerky is definitely in the plans! "Someday I hope to be half the man my bird-dog thinks I am." FBLM LGB!

so, if you have a young buck with a good spread, you can kill him and take him out of the gene pool, but if you an older buck with a crappy spread, he gets to go on and make more bucks with a crappy spread - seems kinda ass backwards -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- All his life he tried to be a good person. Many times, however, he failed. For after all, he was only human. He wasn't a dog.” ― Charles M. Schulz

None of the management rules are perfect. Georgia is that one of your two allowed bucks must have 4 points on one side. Fact is, guessing a deer’s age is pretty hard to do. Even aging by the jaw is subjective. Generally though, the rules work over the long haul. I'm gonna vote for the funniest frog with the loudest croak on the highest log.

Or, pheasantly surprised. I do miss bird hunting. Not much to be found in these parts nowadays unless you want to wander through subdivisions built over what used to be prime pheasant land. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Not sure I'll make a deer season trip this year. Too much going on in life & hard to make the 5 hour drive each way & take a few days off for it. The Enemy's gate is down.

Up here in NW Montana, every school has a cork board where they post the kid's hunting and fishing pics. True Americana, and I love it. Besides elk, I love antelope with a morel mushroom gravy. _____________________________ Off finding Galt's Gulch
