I’m always skeptical of advertisement schemes as their ROI has been pretty much zero. The only things that bring in new customers is word-of-mouth and being listed up top at google.

I’ve heard a couple people mention Nextdoor but never used it as a customer or as a business. Has anyone here actively used Nextdoor to hire a service in your area? Has anyone had an ad placed on Nextdoor generate any new business?

No. Here locally it seems to be a venue for bitching about your neighbor. A thirty some friend of mine reads it for entertainment.

I tried it for a week or two and my comments were censored. I wasn't trolling! It was worse than youtube.
I deleted my account.

We received an invite from a neighbor. I researched the caveats and cautions, balanced those against the perceived benefits, and took a pass.

My wife tried it maybe 6 or 7 years ago and ditched it after a few tries. She said it was a gathering space for Karens to bitch and moan.

I have two different accounts : one here where we live and the other 300 miles across the state where my daughter rents out her house.

I too find the bitching entertaining.

As far as the OP's question ... I find Nextdoor useful for hearing what others are saying about a particular business, contractor or restaurant. I do not bother reading the ads. The last few recommendations on Nextdoor worked well. Nextdoor is first place I go looking to hire someone, but always follow-up with google searches.

I use it to find dudes to do yard work and get recommendations from people in the neighborhood for larger jobs. It’s worked well for those purposes. The functionality of the mobile site is trash. If an ad is free or inexpensive it might be worth it. What’s better is existing customer’s recommending you.

Our Lake Association suggested it to keep in touch.
I tried it
A waste of time, spam, unrelated posts and the group emails did the job much better without the useless crap.

I signed up after my neighbors suggested. Here are my findings:
  • Moron posters too dumb to know when to post something regional vs their neighborhood. I was routinely getting something such as "did anyone get my Amazon package by mistake" from miles and miles away. Useless to me.
  • Spammers. Useless to me.
  • Karen's. Turns out my neighbors like drama (did not know that about them) and seeing the Karen's get flamed is why they're on. Useless to me.

Originally, I thought I just needed to tweak the settings then I'd find it useful, but I was wrong. In the end, I nuked my account as at least in my area it's useless.

I use it to find local tradesmen and local merchants.

You find out real quick if somebody is happy or not happy with someone's service.

I don't call anyone with a bunch of unhappy customers.

Found a few good tradesmen that I have used more than once.

The only advertising thing that seems to work is if someone posts asking for a recommendation for what-ever service. Lawn, painting, car repair etc., and the business owner replies with a phone number and an message that "they'd be happy to help". If this is followed by recommendations from other forum members this leads to a lot of business.
There of course is no cost for this, but if you're not monitoring the board, you'll not get notifications.

Nextdoor is the worse. The most toxic, needy, absolutely idiotic people there are.

I would absolutely stay away from anyone who uses Nextdoor actively enough to actually be affected by its advertising. Anyone that would find you on Nextdoor is almost certainly going to be an idiot, a complainer, and a Karen of the worse kind. Present company excepted, of course.

Mostly posts about helicopters and foxes. But I have searched for recommendations when I've needed a contractor for something.

I agree. When it started it had some usefulness with restaurant recordations etc. but it morphed into a bitchy neighbor hang out. I use our subdivisions Facebook page and find it more friendly with fewer Karons, but there's always a few.
