... and a few "cork crumbs" in the first glass poured. What do you do? How do you correct or recover from that politely?

Now, to be fair, if it's my wine and my glass and I'm the only one around, I really don't have a problem fishing out the crumbs with a clean fingertip.

But what do you do when you have cork crumbs in front of guests?

Cork crumbs seem to go down smooth.

The first glass with the cork bits is yours. Pour on.

Guzzle them puppies. They won’t hurt you.

Well, you should have opened the bottle earlier to let it air a bit, so you'd have time to discretely get rid of them before a guest would see.

Not too sure if Martha Stewart reads this forum, but if it was MY wine I chug it and apologize later. Martha?

Just stick with the stuff that has a screw cap bottle and you'll never have this problem.

This is why it is customary to always pour a small bit first into your glass when your are the one serving wine.

In all seriousness, screw cap wine bottles are no longer taboo. They are becoming much more popular. I've come to prefer them in fact.

I can't disagree with this much, but...
aren't we taught to serve our guests first? Confused

Some also use a synthetic cork now.

The reality is you are turning the corkscrew in too far if that’s happening so pour a little in your glass before filling the guests glasses.

Like I said, you pour a tiny bit into your glass first, then you proceed to fill your guests' glasses then finish filling yours last.

Decant it into another container through a coffee filter to catch the cork pieces. Then serve from the decanter, or simply pour it back into the original bottle.

Cheesecloth, rubber banded to the bottle neck to act as a free flowing strainer. Plus it looks mad-classy.

Decant through an aerating funnel with a stainless screen into a crystal wine decanter. Nothing like the right tool for the job, and makes it look like you know what you’re doing.

I second this as the most seamless route.

If you have cheesecloth lying around. More likely to have a coffee filter (even the metal screen kind, in fact that works better).

Beat me to it, I was going to suggest the same thing.

Not a problem at my household since I pour all of my reds through a Vinturi Decanter/Aerator . It includes a little filter, but the real reason I use it is it makes the wine taste better and more expensive.

+1 My lady friend likes bubbly, sweet wine and I got sick of the previously opened bottles blowing the cork off in my fridge so now I only buy her that sickeningly sweet crap w/ screw caps.
