2018 New Beetle shuts off when making left turns Login/Join

Driving my son home from school I took a hard left and the motor shut off for a split second. It had all left turns from that point to my street and it did the same thing each time. Dash lights on then it would start running again. I made a bunch of right turns on my street without issues, then did a few more lefts and the issue returned.

Car has 35,000 miles.

Any ideas what the cause might be?

Do they have some kind of low oil level shut down? If so, maybe it's on the driver's side of the engine and low oil level would get even lower during a left turn?

Check the oil?

Wild ass guess.

Is the key in the steering column?

It's got to be an electrical gremlin. Any CEL?

Trapper - Two guesses

1 - This be a a problem with the ignition switch harness that runs up the column. While turning left some wires have probably worn through and are contacting, which will shut down the ignition system among everything else, killing the car?

2 - Fuel pump in talk is on left side and is losing prime?

I had a similar problem in a Volvo sedan years back. Every left turn the car showed an over heat on the gauge and idiot lights. it turned out to be a wire leading from an engine temp sensor that had been chaffed thru and when the vehicle turned left the wire would ground against the block. a simple fix of electrical tape and re-routing of the wire that took weeks to figure out. good luck.

The ignition switch is on the steering column.

I usually approach these problems by asking myself what changed, but I couldn’t think of anything. You guys mentioning wires in the steering column being a potential source of the problem are on to something. I adjusted the steering wheel to the full telescope position just before I picked my son up. I’ll test that theory tomorrow.

Previous similar left turn shut down issue on a. ISUZU Rodeo. Thankfully we had a determined and professional mechanic assigned at the dealer. He never quit. Issue 2as so intermittent BUT happened to him while test driving. Found a poorly installed screw under a power connection box under the hood. Engine running her started shak8ng the shit out of everything. Shook that box...power off.

It’s mad at me because I took off all the Trump and gun stickers when my mom gave it to my daughter who has placed Taylor Swift, Boygenius, Motion Sickness, and flower stickers on it.

Turn off the "shutdown engine when stopped" feature. Some sensor is getting confused.

That's a feature so that you keep it off of the NASCAR track!

Best of luck fixing it. Please let us know the solution.

Intermittent short or fuel pump issue would be my first two guesses.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

My TJ Wrangler used to do this too, at low speeds. Turned out to be a failing power steering pump. It would load up engine, reducing RPM then stalling.
I proved it by turning wheel while parked.

What is the fuel level in the tank? Particularly if it has a "split" fuel tank (a large U-shaped cutout in the center to allow the exhaust pipe to pass through, necessitating a pump in each half), the fuel pump(s) could be going out, be dislodged or picking up contamination in the bottom of the tank. Low fuel level on top of any of these can shut the engine off when the fuel sloshes away from the pump pickup (or the junk toward it).
