U.S. Air Force Raises Age Limit For Recruits To 42 After Missing 2023 Recruiting Target. Login/Join

The U.S. Air Force is raising the age limit for recruits to 42 after experiencing its worst recruitment year since 1999. The age limit for recruits wishing to serve as pilots or in front-line roles will remain at 33 years old. Declining enthusiasm and lack of quality among new recruits has become a serious issue for the U.S. military.

The National Pulse previously reported that nearly 70 percent of U.S. soldiers are considered overweight or obese. Enacted on October 24th, the change in Air Force recruitment policy comes after the service branch announced it missed its 2023 fiscal year goal of adding 26,877 recruits by 10 percent. The lagging recruitment numbers are especially concerning as the Air Force has relaxed several service requirements over recent years in an effort to bolster its numbers.

For the current fiscal year, the service branch has set a target of 25,900 recruits. Brig. Gen. Christopher Amrhein, who heads the San Antonio-based Air Force Recruiting Service, brushed aside concerns that bolstering manpower with older Americans could have a negative impact on military readiness. “We are not lowering any of our standards. Someone who is 42 still has to meet the same accession requirements as younger applicants,” Gen. Armheim said regarding readiness concerns, adding the policy change “is about identifying opportunity for talent out there.” In 2014, the Air Force raised the age limit for recruits from 27 to 39. The new 42 year old cut off is the highest among the armed services – the U.S. Navy’s age limit for recruits is 41.

Maybe the older recruits will be better with taking the booster shots and remembering the pronouns.

Meanwhile the USMC met their recruiting goal. They know how to talk to 18 year olds.

As discussed in the previous thread about recruitment issues, this isn't gonna go away anytime soon. The 18-30 year olds have been brainwashed to hate the USA, so why fight for it? Those that are proud of their country aren't gonna join because of all the woke political BS and COVID bullshit that should have never been allowed to begin with. In this instance, our government has created it's own problem and it will take them quite a while to figure it all out.

And yet my kids high school can’t even get the Air Force recruiter to come to the school. If they want to talk to the Air Force, they have to go to the school counselor who then contacts the recruiter to get them to come out

Apparently, a number of schools make it difficult for recruiters to come to see students.

As I approach my 75th birthday, I wonder how long before the Air Force recalls me to active duty!

I am certain that after the Afghanistan pullout debacle, prospective recruits think to themselves why they should play for the losing team.

Not my kids school. All of the other branches are in all the time. My sons Army recruiter has good relationship with school. The guidance counselor said that they can't get the Air Force to come in

Young people saw how the US treated veterans after Iraq and Afghanistan. They also see how military leadership has been replaced with politics. Many parents with military experience are steering their kids away from the US military.

Duh!

Raising the age limit for recruits to 42 isn't going to fix anything... but I honestly don't have a problem with a 42 year-old who wants to serve. They aren't the problem.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

My kids high school has been 3 time back to back and current national champs in Navy JROTC among their various competitions. The recruiting station for all services is within walking distance of campus.

The crosstown rival has an old airplane sitting out at their entrance similar to a military base. But then we are quite proud to have multiple major AF and Navy based and smaller fields within an hour drive of campus.

Neighbor kid joined the AF last year at 19 and is in OK for advanced training how to be a mechanic on the big transport planes. Other neighbor kid is son of 2 AF officers and a senior in high school and he’s telling me no way he’d join up based on current administration. He’s 17 and last 3+ years may be some recency bias.

Really depends on the youngster. But their messaging could be better

Raise it to 55, give me an X-Box controller, and I’ll have those planes flying and probably landing all over the place.

As a former "Drill Sgt" there is no way would I want to be on active duty with the current administration and policies in place and currently changing daily at the whims of the politicians.. Eventhough I was assigned to "AIT" (advanced individual training) .. They had already been thru "basic training" "boot camp" so was not as bad as "green recruits"...... One of the reasons that I got out (with 9 1/2yrs active duty) was all of the changes in policies that had and were being implemented even back then in 1977. ..And I have told anyone that asked about joining any branch of the services to do not believe anything that any recruiter was offering that if he was not willing to put it in writing and willing to sign the contract then run away... But if the recruit was unable to fufill the contract for any reason the they would be subject to the "whims" of Uncle Sam and go and do whatever job that was picked for them.. ..........................................drill sgt.
