Nope I don't associate with drug addicts so there is no chance I need it. If I see someone ODing on the street, I'll call 911. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

Objectively Reasonable |
I carry it at work. "Accidental Exposure" can include things like kids getting into mom/dad's drugs. Very low probability, but it takes nothing to have it in the kit.

If you're trained on its usage and on-duty (so you have some level of liability coverage) not to mention somebody else is paying for it, sure. Otherwise, as a regular Joe citizen, no need for such a specialized item. Why load yourself down?

RE: I don’t know any drug addicts Sure you do; you just don’t know it yet. (Not a reason for antidotes) All walks of life (.mil, .com, .gov, .org, .ca, etc etc); and some are very keen on not being found out. Might be your children, their spouses and/or their kids. Or a close friend. You won’t know until you do. How so? Narcan actually can reverse an overdose. A mask does nothing. Same as 2x mask. Explain please, to us lesser educated and experienced. We have it at home because the wife is on heavy-duty painkillers for her back. My view as far as drug addicts overdosing, play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Take the money that's being pissed away on Narcan and use it to help diabetics or chemo patients.

The hype over accidental fentanyl exposure is similar to the hype around masking/double masking/triple masking. Don’t do drugs. Which is entirely Chongo’s point.

10mm is The Boom of Doom |
Some time back, I was in a rear-end car accident. The other driver (at fault) was acting bizarre and then passed out. I called 911. The police arrived first, then fire. The hose draggers used narcan. One drug user saved. It's a good thing you can't OD on donuts, or I would be in trouble. God Bless and Protect the Once and Future President, Donald John Trump.

Check - Never thought people would worry about exposure to fentanyl in every day life. "Pacifism is a shifty doctrine under which a man accepts the benefits of the social group without being willing to pay - and claims a halo for his dishonesty." ~Robert A. Heinlein

Just be very careful not to touch unknown substances! It looks like Narcan isn't very effective. https://www.justthinktwice.gov/ Carfentanil, a synthetic opioid, is a white powdery substance that looks like it could be cocaine or heroin. Drug dealers mix it with heroin to presumably make the heroin stronger. It is 10,000 times more potent than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl. The drug is also used to tranquilize elephants and other large mammals. This drug is so powerful it poses a significant threat to first responders and law enforcement personnel who touch it by accident. In addition, people can overdose on carfentanil quickly. Multiple doses of the anti-overdose drug Narcan may not be effective. From another source... (https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/mishagajewski/2021/02/02/an-animal-tranquilizer-is-now-linked-to-one-in-three-overdoses-in-philadelphia/amp/) A type of animal tranquilizer, xylazine, is now showing up in almost a third of fatal heroin and fentanyl overdoses in Philadelphia, according to research published today. The drug, which goes by the street name “tranq”, “tranq dope” or “sleep cut”, has been found in more and more illicit drug supplies across the U.S. over the last five years. Meanwhile public health officials are more worried about the fact that it doesn’t respond to the overdose reversal drug Naloxone (Narcan) because it’s not an opioid, leaving responders helpless to prevent an overdose.

I don't understand it. If they want to kill themselves let them. Don't touch them.

The wicked flee when no man pursueth |
We are issued it and carry it at work. One of our cops saved a toddler's life last year after he was accidentally exposed by his stupid parents to fentanyl. Had he waited for a paramedic or EMT to arrive the kid would have been dead. I don't carry it off-duty, but it isn't a terrible idea. Proverbs 28:1

My question is me being what I consider the average old fat middle class white guy... how would I know if I was even exposed to fentanyl or even someone that has been? My Native American Name: "Runs with Scissors"

I carry the updated version jarcan II. It has an improved design of a can in a jar. That way you can use the jar without destroying the can (which is 1x use). These go to eleven.

That was actually another question. I don't have any idea what an overdose looks like.
|
For real? |
I carry it at work but I don't use it. Maybe on a kid for an accidental but honestly, if you're a user and need narcan, I'll wait for the fire dept to get there. Not minority enough!

According to the news reports, if you get within a zip code of the stuff, you go into respiratory failure within .0000001 seconds. And it only takes a microscopic amount and can readily be absorbed through the skin.

Do No Harm, Do Know Harm |
Lemme give some context for my obvious eye-roll with all things narcan and fentanyl… I teach the narcan thing for the biggest police department in NC. Been a paramedic for 19 years. Before this one I wrote the SOP for my prior agency after doing the research at the direction on my chief. I’m not aware of a single, not one, fully documented and published law enforcement exposure, which is what really started the scare. Lots of “I overdosed during a traffic stop and narcan saved my life”, followed by videos showing a panic attack. But not one single tox screen or drug analysis afterwards showing that any of these “overdoses” were overdoses or due to an opioid. Does narcan save lives? Yes, unquestionably. Do innocent people overdose without meaning to? Yes, unquestionably. Especially children in households with things like fentanyl patches and suckers. If you’re really concerned, take a good CPR class and carry a barrier device to give rescue breaths. And a cell phone. People don’t actually die from overdosing on opioids. They die from forgetting to breathe. For the entirety of history of the world with naloxone (narcan), until the last few years, it was ONLY given in 0.2 milligram increments IF the person was NOT breathing, and only repeated to achieve respirations. Now it’s “failed” if you slam 2mg and the person hasn’t sat up gasping like the scene in “Bringing out the Dead” in 30 seconds…leading to reports of people getting 6, 8, 10 milligrams before “it worked”…when often it wasn’t even a narcotic overdose to begin with, but they had a hammer and looked for a nail. Signs would include no or snoring respirations, unresponsive, and constricted pupils. But the naloxone companies have videos on YouTube that will give you as good an explanation as you’ll get anywhere else. Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here. Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard. -JALLEN "All I need is a WAR ON DRUGS reference and I got myself a police thread BINGO." -jljones
