I'm a fan of UnderArmour boot socks. They're sweat wicking compression socks. Been wearing them for more than 10 years now. I have 2 styles which I wear. One is for combat boots which I wear in uniform. The other is a little thicker but made of the same material. It's padded in certain areas. I wear these with my work boots (Red Wing steel toe 8").
