$9500? In NOVA that is about a $6,000-7,000 job. I paid $4,000 for mine with a buddy, but he owed me a favor or two.

Price depends on the system and complexity. When you get into the higher SEER systems with variable speed compressors, fans, and multiple zones with dampers, you’re not gonna get that for 6K. Even more $$ if ductwork needs to be reworked or replaced. One of my friends just installed a new Trane XV20i 20 SEER system in a 1.3 million dollar home: $13,500.

It's normally about $7K-$7500 here (just did one for right at $7K on another property back in 2018). This is just a unique situation.

Hard to explain, but when you climb up the access panel, there's another 4 feet up to a second attic level on which the air handler and hard ducts are located. I have no idea why it was done that way.

I had another HVAC guy who I trust come look and he and he said that the sizing issue has more to do with making the turn under the roof-line up there. I have a separate attic space that would work for the air handler, but the ducts would have to be totally reworked and the cost ends up being about the same. In the end, I have two options that cost about $9500 for the full replacement job (2.5 ton, 15-seer systems).

The repair option was around $900 from either outfit and I'm not interested in spending $900 on an almost 20-year old heat pump.

Since the cost is the same, might as well go with option 2 that includes the ductwork so the NEXT time you have an issue you don't end up with the same problem.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

What size is the fan coil
EDITED, I see 2.5t
Carrier makes a 14" up to 2 ton IIRC.
Most other brands are approx. 17" in that size

If you have duct work issues and it turns into over 12K or so, you might consider a multi head ductless system and just abandon the ductwork.

Very efficient in cooling , and heat down to 5 deg or so with no strip heat.

Last service tech we had out for daughters house flat out lied, made up a BS work order including replacement for parts that were working fine, then tried the old "it's a 15 year old unit and needs to be replaced" line, "we'll send over the sales team" story.

We had another company come, inspect, found none of the parts the first company said were problematic or in need of repair/replace. A shot of R22 and it was done. $100.

Find a good smaller AC company, guys that know how to keep units running and operate off keeping systems going. I bet you can get it fixed for much less.

He's talking about a 15 seer direct replacement on a house built in 2001. That type of install is going to be on the lowest end of the scale. The only add on probably needed is an extra return in MBR if it's only got one return for the system.

^^ I get that. Doesn’t matter what year the house was built. And without having eyes on the actual job, you can’t say it’s too high or too low.

I can't say for sure since I'm not qualified to say much on the subject. The price would give me pause and I'd want to know why it's so high though. I help my buddy when needed on HVAC installs for extra cash, that doesn't qualify me for shit.

It's that high because the air handler is in the attic and has to be completely taken apart to get the old one out, and new one has to be completely taken apart and put back together to get it back up there. OR, move the duct work all around to put it in a better spot. Not a direct swap and lots of labor.

You’re also going to pay a premium for a changeout right now. Mine and every other company in the area is slammed.

Ducting is vital to performance. Clean ducts are healthy. Being able to maintain the air handler is vital. I counsel replacing the ducts, with a real engineering review on sizes and routes. Then put in a new system. Ensure you get an Emerson scroll compressor in the condensing unit. Also evaluate the old line set. As you are relocating the air handler you likely should replace.

I designed compressors for a few years.
