This is brilliant. Wish I had thought of it.
If the Dems think choosing a president by national popular vote is so great, let them lead by example. Skip all the delegate stuff and hold a one-day primary.

Something that I don't hear talked about much is that the winner of the national popular vote doesn't have to get a majority of the popular vote to become president. Bill Clinton won with about 43% of the vote. What the NPVIC will do is cause both parties to encourage third party runs by candidates that will split the other party's votes the way that Ross Perot split the GOP vote in 1992. It happens all the time at the local level in cities that are run by party machines. If you live in Chicago or NYC, you know what I'm talking about. The Democrats there run their candidate who they intend to have win the election, but they also fund candidates to run against the opposition, someone who identifies with the machine but runs as a member of a third party and claims to be the "real" conservative or whatever the case may be. This"fake" candidate has no chance of winning, but he can peel enough votes from the machine's opposition to ensure victory for their real candidate.

The NPVIC will ensure that this happens in national elections. The Democrats and the Republicans will both be incentivized to find their own Ross Perot or multiple Ross Perots who can split the other party's vote. We will never have a winner of a majority of the people again. The parties will spend a billion dollars each on their real candidate and another billion on all the fake third party candidates they are funding to try to suck votes away from the other major party candidate. Every election will come down to which party has found a better slate of fake third-party splinter candidates. They won't even compete for a majority anymore. It will be a race to a plurality.
