In FWD, the Maverick seems to weigh only a few hundred pounds more than the Focus ST, so the 2.0 EcoBoost should be a fine motor. An ST version of the Maverick should get the 2.3 EcoBoost from the Mustang which is the same size on the outside. Unlike a lot of Ford’s latest new offerings, the Maverick seems to be priced well. I’d be curious how the base hybrid drives because 39mpg is appealing.

Good gas mileage will probably come in handy.

I hope it gets into production sometime soon, but my faith is weak.

I pre-ordered pretty much the same thing I bet. X-Plan will save me a few bucks and any markup. If I don't fit at 6'5", the sales manager will happily sell it to someone else.

ETA: Pretty slimey to say MSRP is under $20K and then immediately add $1500 for "destination" but I suppose they've all been doing that forever.

This pickup appeals to quite a few different groups. I'm in one of them.
My day job (drone pilot for a large asphalt paving company)requires me to drive all over the state. So, gas mileage is very important.
Secondly, I need the storage/carry space a small truck provides for my gear. Today's 'small' trucks like the Ranger are damn near the size of a 10 year-old F-150. Too big, at least for me.
Third, it needs to be reliable as I will put 100k miles on it in 3 years' time (the fact this is engine has been proven in the FoST is a big plus).
Finally, I will use this vehicle on weekends for fishing, etc.

The Maverick hits all those buttons. While the hybrid version is attractive, I absolutely loathe CVTs.

So when my current work truck crosses the 250k mark (Toyota 4Runner), the Maverick is *very high* on my list to replace it. We should have some good indication of real-world reports on it by then (one year from now).

All of the pictures I've seen have that "Low Rider" look which does not appeal to me. I've not seen one in the wild so that could just be some ad guy's idea of what will sell this vehicle. I want a truck to look like a truck that could actually do some work. I guess that's old timer thinking, but it's a paradigme that sticks with me.

I like the idea. It's like an old ranger, affordable and small.

I think it depends on how you define “work”. To some guys it’s throwing a load of firewood, or gravel, towing a large trailer and such.

To others, like VictimNoMore “work” is driving a lot of miles and carrying relatively bulky but light gear. Both definitions are very valid but very different.

Seems like it’ll work for some.

Remember, this thing is unibody and rides on essentially a car/crossover SUV chassis, so its going to ride much lower than a body on frame truck would. Interestingly, I think its stance will be viewed positively by the majority of people who would consider it. I like the stance and looks of the vehicle I posted pics of in my initial post, which should be mostly capable of doing the kind of work I would use it for.

I left Ford about 12 years ago, best decision I ever made. I use work vans and they sucked!! 2nd Chevy van for work and no complaints.

I actually don't do a lot of heavy duty work with my truck regularly, nor do I need 4x4 often, but it's like having a gun, better to have one and not need it, then need it and don't have it. As I said, it's probably old guy syndrome but that's what's ingrained in my dense head. I'm sure it's a reasonable vehicle, but just not my idea of a truck. To me there's just too many other options that offer more. Sure maybe more expensive, but trucks hold their value very well. The Maverick will have to prove itself in that regard.

I like it.
Though Having 3 boys and a dog I need the cab space of my Crew Max Tundra.
In 10 years when they are out of the house one like Pyker posted will suit my needs just fine.
A roof rack mated to a bed rack to carry longer items like kayaks and bikes.
Add a 1.5-2” lift and some mildly aggressive tires and it would be perfect for outdoor sports and camping.

Will be interesting to see the state of vehicles in 10 years.

I am a fan of stripped down vehicles personally.
Give me a motor, manual transmission, manual transfer case, a backup camera, and a simple double din stereo that is not connected to every other system like the HVAC, etc, that I can do a simple swap to an aftermarket unit.
That is all I need.

I’d need a good deal more ground clearance to navigate our two track ranch roads. That thing looks like it would drag at both ends and in the middle.

I saw a Hyundai Santa Cruz on the road about 1.5 weeks ago. It's sharp and will be a direct competitor to the Maverick.

Yep, the Santa Cruz is a bit more feature packed and more expensive than the Maverick. It also looks a bit more SUV like to me than truck. How about a Santa Cruz like this....

Even a base Ridgeline is way more expensive, way more feature rich, and ultimately, somewhat larger. Though these two vehicles are similar, I really don't see them competing for the same customers.

My mind immediately went to the Ridgeline as well.

I'd actually consider one of these. I was a big fan of my Gen 1 Ridgeline. Great functionality for a daily driver truck that doesn't need to do full-sized truck duties, but does need to handle weekend projects, camping trips, etc.

However, the newer Gen 2 Ridgelines priced themselves out of my interest. I paid ~$28k in 2007 for my upper-mid-tier Ridgeline. The newer ones start at $38k, and a comparable trim package to my Gen 1 will run you $41k.

So considering they're coming in at $28k for the AWD Maverick, I'll be checking one out at some point.

I like that Ford appears to be making a genuine effort to make something for everyone. While this may not seem too exciting to the F-150, Ranger and Bronco enthusiasts I can see this vehicle doing quite well with lots of other people. Those who may not want or care about an off-road oriented vehicle and just want an affordable and nice riding truck with good fuel economy and the utility such a vehicle brings to the table are the people Ford had in mind when they built this vehicle.

I can totally see the name ruffling some feathers but it’s not like the original Ford Maverick was a tremendous success anyway.

That Hyundai a few posts above looks so sweet! It has a bit of a Holden Maloo vibe going with the way the bed curves into the back of the cab.
