I would give at least two weeks notice to the company that you have decided to retire after 42 years of service and move on. If they ask you to stay a bit longer you can do that or not but retire with professionalism and grace. Even if the relationship has soured for whatever reason you still don't want to burn bridges so take the high road, don't bad mouth any person or the organization.
