2 year term.

I can do whatever I want; right?

Let's see...

-Build a wall?
-Neighborhood security cameras
-$200 monthly fine for anyone who owns a Tesla or Prius
-Monthly dues waived Law enforcement/military/veterans or anyone displaying an American flag...
-$200 monthly penalty for anyone who does not produce proof of firearms ownership...

Yeah, I know, that's not how it works, but I can dream; right?

In all seriousness, we'll see how this goes. As soon as we left the building the exiting treasurer and secretary informed me we were in the process of switching HOA managing companies, so we've got some things to deal with after Christmas. The previous president moved and the interim president was a no-show. Our HOA is very new and only three years old. The management company is the one the neighborhood builder picked because they were cheap.

Any advice from anyone who's held the position would be appreciated.

I've been president of my equivalent of the HOA for a few terms. Still on the board. Being president is a major PITA, because everyone comes to you for anything.

Better to be involved then leave it up to others. My wife was the HOA president. It was a decent amount of work.

Based on local events, if you contract part of management to an outside firm consider a hard look. This all started with a CPA on Board asking for originals of all current bank statements and getting and answer of "no"!

Can you form your own security force? That would be cool.

Cool

Well in our neighborhood we have:

-Two state troopers
-One city cop
-One gunsmith/gun dealer (me)
-One Neuro PA
-Three RN's

We're definitely loaded with security and first responders. Wink

Tony.

What you have right there are the building blocks for a full on militia.

Now you just need a kick-ass insignia for patches and challenge coins and whatnot.

Been there, done that....

My wife and I built a home in a new sub division when we were first married and we literally first and only resident for months. As the neighborhood filled we started to see issues with the builder and I went to bat for many of my neighbors so we would not get screwed...when it came time to take over the HOA I was pretty much told I was President.

First thing i noticed is that many who showed 100% support initially quickly turned when they discovered riles could not be bent or broken to accommodate them just because they were active in the HOA. Then there were the folks that bought homes and moved in w/o reading the CC&Rs at all then acted shocked when they were told that parking a huge camper on your lawn for a month was not cool. My personal favorites were the idiots that would try to use the HOA to settle petty and personal disputes with each other.

I tried really hard to run a "different kind" of HOA and not be petty or nagging but in the end the residents were their own worst enemies.

Made that mistake once myself.
What it really means is that you're the head of and primary contact for the neighborhood complaint department.
Instead of actually talking politely to neighbors they have an issue with first, you are hereby appointed with that task and required to solve any and all problems to their satisfaction. You do this because they pay you so much.
You're the neighborhood Judge Wapner.

I’ve been on the HOA board for about a year now and serve as secretary. Right now, I would say I couldn’t be talked into being president.

Get an old military uniform and put a bunch of medals on it, then get a golf cart paint it camo and put little flags on the front so you can cruise in style. Also a loud speaker system.

Being HOA Pres. in a 26 home development in WA was a complete PIA.
Moved to AZ and 3500 home development 19 years ago. Guess who will never be running for the top HOA office!

I was president of our HOA 33 tracts of land. I was approached by members wanting a new president. The old president emptied the bank account every year by hiring his family to do the work and claiming that it was state law to have a zero balance after the fiscal year. That and he was harassing the owners for every little thing. When I left office we had fixed the roads, and ended up with $10,000 in the bank. As president I was only one vote of 5.

Be fair, stay out of the lives of members as much as possible. You will never keep 100% of the people happy, strive for 90%.

I’ve served many terms on the board of my HOA. It’s a thankless job, but our board President does a wonderful job so I want to be there to support her.
