CDC announces two paediatric cases of monkey pox.

Walensky indicated the following about these two monkeypox cases: “Both of those children are traced back to individuals who come from the men who have sex with men, the gay men’s, community. So, when we have seen those cases in children, they have generally been what I call adjacent to the community most at risk.”

"adjacent"?

Plain speaking is always appreciated.

WHO Calls on Big Tech to Censor Monkeypox ‘Disinformation’

https://slaynews.com/news/who-...ign=daily-newsletter

The World Health Organization (WHO) is calling on Big Tech companies to censor information about monkeypox that is deemed to be “disinformation.”

As the virus spreads into a global outbreak, WHO is insisting that social media platforms must tackle “disinformation” through strict national regulations.

The United Nations health agency also called on news organizations to counter misinformation by promoting WHO-approved narratives.

Last weekend, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared the virus a “public health emergency of international concern.”

So far, there have been more than 18,000 cases and five deaths across 78 different countries, recent numbers indicate.

Approximately 70 percent of those cases were reported from Europe, while the Americas make up about 25%.

The virus has primarily spread among “men who have sex with men” and is spread through close physical contact, including sexual intercourse.

The virus could also be spread by touching objects that someone with the virus had used.

Ghebreyesus warned that men who engage in homosexual sex should reduce the number of partners they sexually engage with.

He further cautioned nations to be on guard against “disinformation” about the virus.

“The stigma and discrimination can be as dangerous as any virus and can fuel the outbreak,” Ghebreyesus said.

“As we have seen with COVID-19, misinformation and disinformation can spread rapidly online.”

“So we call on all social media platforms, tech companies, and news organizations to work with us to prevent and counter harmful information,” he added.

New York City’s Department of Health recently wrote a letter to Ghebreyesus saying the city has once again found itself at the epicenter of a contagious disease after it surpassed 1,000 confirmed cases.

The department also expressed worry about the effect the name monkeypox can have on vulnerable communities “given the stigma it may engender, and the painful racist history within which terminology like this is rooted for communities of color.”

The letter asked the WHO to use alternative terms for the virus, such as “hMPRXV” and “MPV,” as the virus does not “originate in monkeys.”

However, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website claims monkeypox was first discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research.

Yet, the CDC says the disease’s source remains unknown, despite its name.

Democrat President Joe Biden’s administration could declare monkeypox a national public health emergency in the coming days, according to Politico.

The announcement would come from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and give the federal agency the ability to receive more taxpayer money and appoint new personnel.

Scott Gottlieb, the former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, told The Washington Post it might be too late to stop the monkeypox virus from becoming endemic in the U.S.

“We may have already crossed that threshold — then it will be looked back on as among the biggest public health failures of recent times,” Gottlieb said.

CDC officials reported more than 4,600 cases of monkeypox in the U.S. as of July 27.

That is hardly useful information if she can not also define "man".

Hochul declares state of ‘disaster emergency’ over monkeypox

Gov. Kathy Hochul issued an executive order Friday night declaring the spread of monkeypox a “disaster emergency” as 1,400 cases of the viral disease were recorded statewide.

The vast majority of the cases — 1,289 — have occurred in New York City, according to health officials who warn that many more cases are likely undiagnosed.

During the time COVID was emerging and government was telling people to modify behavior such as distancing, masks, don't go out to stores, restaurants and so on, the message to everyone was to curb risky behavior that could put others at risk.

Have there been similar public calls for the gay community to modify their behavior? No.

There were public calls for the gay community to modify their behavior during the early AIDS days and they were pretty much ignored, so why bother this time?

My new next door neighbors (moved in 3 years ago) are very conservative and ecstatic escapees from CA. He retired from LADWP. They still have a daughter teaching school in CA. He told me on the phone last night that CA is now requiring school children to be vaccinated against the new pox.

Monkeypox is rousing old fears — and ways gay men care for each other
quote:
Monkeypox is rousing old fears — and ways gay men care for each other

In a changed world, gay men still remember the anxiety (and lessons) of the darker days of HIV/AIDS

Eric Sawyer feels a familiar fear. In the gay hamlet of Fire Island Pines, where he owns a bungalow, men have been swapping gossip about ghastly symptoms, scanning each other for any blemish, scrounging for medical interventions in short supply. For Sawyer, 68, this type of anxiety is not an artifact but a scar on his heart.

“While monkeypox is not deadly, just like with HIV there are myriad horror stories,” says Sawyer, a longtime activist who in 1987 was on the ground floor of ACT UP, the collective committed to ending the AIDS epidemic. “It opens up a lot of the raw wounds, brings back interrupted grieving from having so many friends die.”

Since May 17, nearly 5,200 cases of monkeypox have been identified in the United States, and none have been fatal; an overwhelming majority of those infected worldwide have been men who have sex with men, a demographic whose broad and dense sexual networks are a conduit for a virus that spreads through close, often intimate, physical contact.

The scourge may not be as serious as HIV, or the coronavirus still causing covid-19, but monkeypox has come along at a time when gay people in America are already feeling stressed and vulnerable. Sawyer thinks about the recent surge of homophobia, including anti-gay legislation at the state level and a spike in threats and attacks on LGBTQ people. A social symptom of monkeypox is fear that the country is headed for a time warp; in the 1980s, AIDS was first mislabeled in the media as “gay-related immune deficiency,” and the gay community suffered not just from illness but renewed ostracization.

....

“I think we’re all exhausted,” says Nicholas Diamond, 29, manager of editorial services at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (and husband to Makofane). “We just were maybe seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of the covid-19 pandemic, and looking forward to a slutty summer, and we now have to deal with monkeypox and a government that really fumbled its response without learning the lessons of covid-19. So everyone’s tired. And it is hard to talk about anything when you’re worried if your last hookup was going to get you sick, or last visit to the bar is going to get you sick. And I have to wonder if this is what our community was thinking about in 1981, too.”

...

Sex positivity defines modern gay life, sure, but so does awareness, prevention and treatment of disease. Nicholas Diamond helped to fashion a tip sheet last month, titled, “Six Ways We Can Have Safer Sex in the Time of Monkeypox.”

“Girls, we hate to say it, but it might be time to hang up the group sex and saunas until we all get shots one and two of the vaccine,” Diamond wrote with two of his collaborators in the rapid survey of monkeypox in New York, where the mayor on Monday declared a state of emergency due to the outbreak. “This is temporary and out of a love for group sex and those who enjoy it.”
