My wife bought a kitchen table for $75 a few months ago without telling me. I go to pick it up and it’s 4 different colors with marker, crayon, oil stains, etc.

No worries, feels like good wood, I can put 60 hours into this and make it a $1k table based off my time, no worries hun.

I strip it, sand it with 4 levels, steel wool it, then stain it.

I’m no carpenter so I just go to Home Depot for the stain.

First attempt was Cherry, too dark. Second attempt was Oak, too light she says. Now I’m back next weekend for the only shade in between, “pecan”.

I’ve got 50$ into stain alone at this point and I gotta sand two section over. That’s only another 2 hours of work.

I’m married to all three of Goldilock’s bears at this point.

Darker cherry, lighter oak, and lightest is the natural wood. These are the bottoms, stained those first in case I had to sand again, tops are pristine so didn’t wanna mess with them until we find the, “just right” color.

I don’t have to sit down to dinner with you every night at the, “too light” table Dan!

I’m pulling hairs out, as if I don’t have enough stuff to do.

That requires getting out of the car at Home depot or accompanying me on a trip that isn’t to a clothing store Gene. I’m being dramatic but it’s not too far fetched.

I agree. I think they have samples that show the approximate ending color.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I don’t consider it a game. More a lack of understanding or communication. I’m gonna change it to what makes her happy.

If I didn’t care I would have left it looking like Ronald McDonald’s playground.

I’m just more or less bitching about the amount of work I have to put in.

I like the darkest one.

My wife says we should do this and we should do that around the house. Of course that really means “ I “ should be doing all these things.

Sounds like a very dysfunctional marriage. I hope you find a way to make some changes.
Edit to add that I'm not trying to insult you or anything. I just feel that our society has somehow normalized these behaviors in women and we as men somehow are expected to live like that.
Respectful and caring partnerships have been replaced with the bullshit "happy wife happy life" crap and we shouldn't stand for it.
Choose a partner who is respectful of your time and energy.

The secret is to do it so badly that they never asks you to do it again, ergo avoiding the issue altogether.

Guys tend to get caught up proving they have the ability, talent, time and patience to fix things... no, never ever let people know you can do this stuff, or you'll be doing it for everyone for ever...

I'm not staining or painting anything until we agree on a color, if it sits for years or never gets done, oh well
