Life's too short to
live by the rules

This is a very interesting observation/rant. Normally I would agree with you and be just as appalled, but on our most recent vacation, I had to be "one of those people" that had to go to breakfast in more relaxed clothes.

We visited NYC for our summer vacation this year. We stayed at the Embassy Suites which offers a nice full breakfast. The issues I ran into were two fold. One, the place in which they served breakfast was rather small and it would get SLAMMED PACKED really fast. Second, my wife isn't a big breakfast person and was in no way motivated to get up, get dressed and get down to breakfast before it got crowded. So to avoid the crowd and get breakfast, the boy and I would get up early, put on some athletic shorts and a t-shirt and flops and head down for breakfast to beat the crowd. Ok, to be fair, I wore the shorts and t-shirt. The boy was fully dressed (khaki shorts and a polo) and ready to go. He refuses to wear t-shirts and athletic shorts outside of gym class.

Now I know I could have gotten up earlier and dressed and ready, but after walking around and touring NYC for 8-10 hours a day, I tried to sleep in as much as possible.

Now that was the exception based on situation rather than a rule. Normally, we would get up, get dressed and hit breakfast on the way out to whatever we where doing for the day.

Gym clothes or, warm-ups is one thing, as American's I get that we have relaxed standards than others, I'm fine with sweats and shorts. Rolling down in bed clothes/PJ's, showing up like you 'just emerged' is something all together different and the point of issue.

I don’t pack a heavy load out complete with lounge wear, flip flops, gym gear, pajamas, whatnot. The wife and kids have finally come around too.

I’ll shower, dress for the day, go down and read the “paper” grab the wife a to go platter. It would seem from my observations there is a line somewhere around 45 years of age, above which you can see people have been through living in civilization training.
