Michener's novel Chesapeake (1978) has decent descriptions of larger punt guns in action. Along with the devastation they caused to wildfowl populations along Maryland's Eastern Shore back in the day.

That's not hunting...that's slaughtering...

Of course it is, and for the same reason as slaughtering other animals to this day: to supply commercial markets with food.

Until the mean old government passed laws limiting hunting (call it “harvesting” if you like) wildlife for commercial purposes, many animals were killed by various means (not only shooting) nearly to the point of extinction—or beyond (e.g., the passenger pigeon).

So can I still buy a Punt gun? I guess they're all antique. Looks like fun, even if I'm not shooting at passenger pigeons or ducks. I can think of a few flocks of geese that could use a shot or two. Dirty streets no more.
