lol. You guys can be so dramatic. The OP clearly spelled out what his question was. It wasn’t are you happy, is your walk with God where it needs to be, are you healthy. He asked what you define as wealthy in monetary terms. Money. Scratch. $$$$$’s. It’s right there in the first post. Please no more “as long as my cat loves me I consider myself wealthy”. “What’s your favorite gun?” “I prefer oranges over watermelons”. To quote Gold 5, “stay on target”.

Liquid assets - bank accounts, IRA's, 401K's, precious metals, what have you. $1mm Real estate, collectables, saleable merchandise. $2mm So my answer is $3mm in total, WITH NO DEBT. That is what I would consider rich. This message has been edited. Last edited by: P220forever,

'One ping only, Vasily...' "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

As my former pastor liked to say: Did you flip a light switch today? Did you turn on the faucet today? Did you open the cabinet and had to make a choice from the many things inside what to eat? If that was "Yes" then YOU are RICHER than 80% of the rest of the world

I define 'rich' as being able to do what you want to do each and every day. My wife and I always try to have a couple thousand dollars with us at all times if we are out and about which allows us to spur of the moment things. All of our vehicles, house, shop and land is paid for. We are surrounded by a state park and across the river is another large park which affords us a quiet place to live and endless walking and nature paths. My business, which spurned from a previous policing job, provides for us and I have people in place to run it. Time, and what I can do with it, is more valuable than have stuff printed on paper that you can't hold nor get to within 72 to 96 hours. We are happy! *************** "A man can never have too much red wine, too many books, or too much ammunition." - Rudyard Kipling

Here's another way to look at it those that ascribe being rich to being content don't particularly care. I consider myself rich because I'm on my way to my goals. All rich means to me is I've reached that goal. Currently that's 10-15 years out. If some biotech or quantum computing company pops for 10x maybe I'm rich next week. A yacht doesn't make you rich. If I wanted to feel completely secure in my family's legacy, I'd say $20m should be fine, but $30m would be better, and $50m would be even better. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

Homeless people can use the above and claim to be "rich". The OP's question is about monetary levels, not what makes one "happy". Actually, the OP says:
The OP asked 1) What do you guys consider being rich and 2) What criteria is used to achieve that level? So, to me tht asks what do I consider being rich and what criteria is used to achieve that level. A person's idea of how rich they are isn't determined by how much is in their pockets or in their bank account but between their ears. I remember watching a tv segment at a time when I had a well-paying job, a nice house, healthy savings and retirement accounts, and the segment was followed an aborigine waking up from his hammock. He walked down towards a stream, drank some water, moved to a portion of the bank and pulled up a snail to snack on. He sat on his hunches, eyes up, chewing that snail, and he surveyed his kingdom with a smile and satisfaction. He had no 401k, no savings, etc. but he certainly was rich in his mind and I actually envied him in that moment. So obviously, rich can be achieved with zero money. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Rey, my point was and is he meant cash and things that can become cash. He never asked about your spiritual walk, how much your dog loves you, or your fucking health. I think you understood that but decided to go anal retentive on my post for some reason. Whatever.

During the Obama administration, I recall they we're regarding the 2% the rich. That is to say those folks had amassed a net worth greater than the other 98%. In today's dollars that would amount to $2 million. I don't disagree with that. You ought to be able to comforably live out your days on that, but that depends entirely on the type of lifestyle you live and debt load. To me, it makes no sense carrying debt into retirement; although I understand why folks do it. The trick is to set a goal when your still young enough to achieve it. Most folks don't, therefore they never become rich. It's really not that hard, live below your means and save/invest the rest. Also, protect yourself with insurance. Shit's gonna happen, and I understand nobody like's paying premiums. But the risk of potentially getting wiped out by illness or natural disaster is far worse.

My answer didn’t involve spiritual walk, how much my dogs love me, or my health. I simply pointed out that the OP did ask what is considered rich and the criteria for being rich. That does open the door for answers that may not involve money. As far as being anal retentive, one definition I saw says “Anal retentiveness is a personality trait that is characterized by excessive concern with details.” Link From my point of view, your post about people being dramatic comes off as being concerned about the detail that people’s answers weren’t honed in on what you think the OP was asking about - money. I merely pointed out the OP could be read as what is the criteria for being rich. He didn’t ask what is the threshold or amount of money needed to be considered rich. We’re all just sitting around the campfire shooting the breeze. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Well your “fucking health” determines your wealth actually, in more ways than one. Hey you’re “rich bitch!” but immobile due fucked up health. You have to use a walker and generally don’t leave the house unless it’s a required medical appointment. But you got 10 mil in the bank. Are you rich? Either way this is a forum, and the OP is not a professor in charge of doctoral thesis. What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone
