I remember reading that a gun registry was tried for something like 10 years and it helped solve exactly zero crimes. Does anyone remember where the registry was tried or have a link to the story?

I think you might be referring to the registration and gathering of fired cases.

It might have been Mass.

Pretty sure it was Maryland, but New Yorkistan seems likely as well. Regardless, I don't think it's 'solved' a crime anywhere it's been tried!

NYS combined Ballistics Identification System program "CoBIS", had no impact on identifying or solving cases.

However, it was instrumental in identifying when your Glock was manufactured as a spent case including date was required.

Prior to the NY Safe Act the project was decommissioned.

As an aside, during the 70's all handgun ammunition sales had to be logged at point-of-sale.

This too was short-lived.

Pre- '86 records were kept on ammo sales. FOPA removed this requirement. Don't know of any instances when this bookkeeping assisted in closing any cases.

Yeah, I do seem to recall it was Maryland. It was posted here long ago and we all said a collective "no shit, Sherlock".

No, it was surely in USA. It was a surprising article because the liberals in charge admitted it did not work, it solved no cases and was extremely costly.

Hell. Births are recorded in all states.

Registering people doesn't solve crime either.

I think in Michigan you have to turn in paperwork on the purchase of a pistol to the police so it can be entered into their database.
