An explosion rocked Los Angeles on Wednesday, injuring at least 17 people -- including nine LAPD officers -- after a bomb squad attempted to detonate improvised explosive devices that were seized at a home along with a cache of illegal fireworks.

In a news conference late Wednesday, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Michel Moore said authorities responded to the home, where they found thousands of pounds of illegal fireworks, as well as improvised explosive devices, described as "more unstable." A suspect was arrested in connection to the items seized at the home, police said.

The LAPD bomb squad transferred the improvised devices into a containment vehicle, and detonated them, believing it would contain the blast, which overturned a car and shattered windows in the neighborhood, Moore said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Clearly protocols were followed and pursued, but something happened in that containment vehicle that should have not happened and we don’t know why," he added. "We intend to find out why."…

Sounds like an article from the onion. It’s a little much of a stretch to label the homemade fireworks as IEDs.

I was under the assumption that those purpose built eod trucks/trailers were designed to contain an accidental explosion while in transit as opposed to being used to purposely detonate material inside of them.

Around here they drag that stuff out to a quarry and blow it up there.

My guess is that they mis identified the explosive and it obviously surpassed the explosive limit of the trailer.

Yeah.... Nice work. When I first read the story, I thought that detonating it in the neighborhood was pretty poorly thought out. As others have posted, those things are usually transported to a remote area or a designated military safe area.

LAPD has a VERY reputable Bomb Squad but mistakes, misjudgements and/or unintended consequences happen to the best squads around the country. A friend of mine, Arleigh McCree (a partner of my father in CCS) was killed in a garage in 1986 while trying to defuse a pipe bomb. I believe he'd responded from his son's baseball game. Mistakes were made, unfortunately, he was killed with another officer. Pretty sure static electricity contributed in his case.

I'll be interested to hear what the investigation reveals. Thankfully, no injuries or death resulted in this case.

US Army EOD lost three soldiers in a fireworks incident back in 1980.

SP5 Ronald L. Kostenbader, SSG Nancy Ann Oszakewski, and SP4 Joseph John Tripodi were killed on 29 July 1980. They were assigned to the 70th Ordnance Detachment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), Fort Rosecrans, California. SP5 Kostenbader, SSG Oszakewski, SP4 Tripodi, and two other members of the detachment were in the process of loading approximately 1,000 pounds of illegal Mexican fireworks onto a truck at Fort Rosecrans, California. For an unknown reason the fireworks on the truck suddenly started to burn. SP5 Kostenbader, SSG Oszakewski, and SP4 Tripodi ran into the open bunker to escape the flash fire. The wind direction caused the fire to follow them into the bunker and initiated the fireworks that were still contained inside. The flash fire inside the bunker killed the three explosive ordnance disposal specialists. The two other explosive ordnance disposal specialists ran from away from the truck and bunker, and received minor burns and injuries that were not critical.
