I have the floor standing speakers paired with a different center, two rears, and two 10" subs.

First, consider buying the speakers from Amazon. They do arrive in a safe and sound manner (unless you can pick them up for the same $$).

Second, these speakers rock. Others can get into the those details which lead down the road toward "I just don't like Klipsch because..." You'll enjoy them for both TV and music.

Third, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS go with two 10" subs vice a single 12" or single 15". Of course two 12" subs is always an option but then you're getting up there in cost.

Fourth, of the three friends who have heard my mains/subs combo and bought the same set-up - all three have thoroughly loved the results. Just saying, the odds are very low you won't absolutely love them - your wife on the hand... (unless she likes it loud too that is). Big Grin

I've got two Yamy home theater receivers, love it. I really like the mic tool for setting up balance as well, it works perfectly!

Can you tell me about this? Do you just put a splitter on your LFE? Do you have them in specific corners? Do you have traps? Is your theater at all underground or partially under?

I've often wondered how well two 10" subs would sound in my basement. (Where the "theater" type setup is located.) I'm just not terribly well-versed in sub-woofer lore.

Thanks for the advice so far. To answer some questions:

1. I am definitely getting a subwoofer. I was thinking of just one 12” but I am now thinking of two (2) 12” ones;

2. The room is only 15x19. I also don’t have 9’ ceilings (standard height);

3. I’m very interested in the cooling unit mentioned. I plan on adding one of these;

4. I was thinking of a 7.2 receiver so I could have two side/floor speakers, a center speaker for dialogue and four (4) ceiling speakers with two (2) positioned 1/2 way between the front speakers and the couch and the back speakers. As mentioned at least one if not two subwoofers too.

Goals:

1. I like dialogue to be clear and clean.

2. I’m tired of noisy rude people in theaters. Therefore, while I can’t afford a $$$$$$$ system, I would like something that would be enjoyable in lieu of shelling out bucks for the movie theater;

3. I want something that will attract my kids’ friends to the house instead of my kids always going to their house. Gaming is more important for the boys than movies unless it is a Marvel/Star Wars movie. The girls are more into the Anne of Green Gables type of movies. Dad is a John Wayne, Bourne Identity, Star Wars type of person. Mrs. BB61 is fairly easy;

4. Quality/reliability. I live in a Toyota Camry type of house for lack of a better definition. I’m trying to be realistic about what my space is and what I can afford;

5. I hadn’t thought about ATMOS. Can you give me more advice/direction?

6. Can someone explain the qualitative difference between the Denon S950 that I was looking at vs. the Denon AVR X3400 that has been mentioned a couple of times?

7. This system would be used for playing music too.

THANKS!!!!!

The current receiver has two sub out (Left & Right) and the subs are placed back corners from the chairs. (Previous receiver had a mono sub out and I used a "Y" adapter. I can't really tell a difference as, IMO, most low frequency sound waves are so long a stereo sound isn't, typically, heard/noticed.)

My "theater" is the living of my house. It is a lofted ceiling (goes from 8' above the sitting position to 17' above the mains/TV which leads into a loft on one side and the wall of a small bedroom on the other. It is not conducive to good sound but the speakers do help overcome that.

I do know the manner which the ceiling reflects sound into the loft and against the bedroom's wall does not allow for someone to sleep/relax in the bedroom when the speakers are being used.

2 Things.
The S is 2 years warranty. The X is 3 years.

The X has the better EQ. MultEq 32.

Atmos you can do a 5.1.2
The .2 would be speaker directly over head set as top middle.

In a 9 channel it would be a 5.1.4
2 to the front and 2 to the rear of main listening position.

Or 2 on front wall and 2 on rear wall set as Height speakers.
Following Dolby guidelines on distance in their website.

That amp has a menu to select how you installed your speakers. It sounds to me like you are installing 7 speakers (F L/R, Center, Rear L/R, overhead/height L/R, so you will meet the requirements. Do 2 subs, you (the kids) will like it. Read attached Denon manual and Dolby website on mounting options.
http://manuals.denon.com/AVRS9...N/DRDZSYpvilxnds.php
https://www.dolby.com/us/en/brands/dolby-atmos.html

To get Atmos content you will need,
1. HD streaming (Amazon, Netflix HD both stream Atmos content, there are other 4K streaming gadgets - my TV's have the built-in aps so no firestick or other needed)
2. A 4K Ultra HD bluray player. I have the LG UBK90, Sony has a top line one also.
3. The movie needs to support Atmos, it will list it on the package.

Connect the TV to the receiver using the ARC HDMI connection. Use good quality wiring for HDMI connections, speakers and sub's. I ordered mine (to fit) from BlueJean cables https://www.bluejeanscable.com/ . If you are going to run wires in the walls do it right the first time. If you are spending $3-5K for all these components, don't cheese-ball out with some cheap crappy wiring (regardless of who tells you they run the generic $4 HDMI cables and 18G speaker wires). Their good sub cable shields it from picking up a 60HZ hum - but try to keep power wires away from speaker/sub wiring as a general rule. Subs can have a wireless module for a little more money so that is also an option (mine are hardwired).

After all this hopefully you have a 4K TV to enjoy the visual content of a 4K movie, if not put that on the list.

When done get out the popcorn and crank it up, the kids will enjoy.

I'm running a pair of Outlaw Audio subs in my 7+2 system. They're Hsu designs and self powered. Smile

Great stuff and they can be had for great prices on sale or as seconds (slight finish blemishes).

I bought the Denon AVR S950H receiver. It was $499 and seemed to good a deal to pass. I bought an AC Infinity fan system for it as well. Right now, I’m waiting to get some quotes back on a variety of different Klipsch speakers through my nephew. I’m now trying to decide on a TV. I’m only 13-14’ from the TV so I’m thinking 75-82”. I’m not really convinced I need the latest and greatest. The TV in our living room is a Samsung that is 5 years old and we still like it. I’ll let everyone know the speaker system I get once I’ve got a final quote.

Scope out the TCL Series 6 in 65" and 75". I've the former along with a 32" TCL that's 9 years old. Fantastic 4K HDR LED TV with Roku built in. Reviews are legit superlative and the prices are 1/2 to a 1/3 what the big boys want. FWIW TCL just became the #2 seller stateside.

Good place to look around:
