Several sources are reporting he's quitting after something like 44 years in the Senate. I heard it on Fox Business, but am attaching an article from Axios.

Adios, MF'r, can't wait to see what lowlife scum bottom-feeding lizard they find to run in your place.

"Dick Durbin retiring after nearly 3 decades in the Senate

Stephen Neukam

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the Senate Democratic whip, announced his retirement on Wednesday.

Why it matters: Durbin's retirement will kick off one of the first open leadership contests in a decade, continuing a generational change in the Senate Democratic caucus.

Durbin, 80, was facing reelection next year.
Durbin is a longtime member of Senate Democratic leadership and has been in the Senate since 1997. He has served in Congress since 1983.
His retirement will also open up what is likely to be a hotly-contested primary in Illinois to fill the Senate seat.
The big picture: Durbin joins a growing list of Senate Democrats who are calling it quits ahead of the 2026 election.

Sens. Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Tina Smith (D-Minn.) have all announced their retirements this year. Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) is also running for governor.
Next year's elections could mirror the last, when younger Democrats were elected to replace a number of retiring senior Senate Democrats."

Rush called him "Dick Turban."

Is there a chance the GOP can win the slot? I live just across the river and don't hear about any stars in the party.

I don't think there's a chance in hell that a Republican can win the seat. Illinois has been under the control of corrupt, hard-left politicians for so many decades that, when the population decrease (fleeing the state) caused the loss of one Congressional seat, they jerrymandered the only strongly Republican District, my own 16th District. Not that losing Adam Kinzinger was unanticipated or undesirable, but the fact is that now I'm in a Democrat district.

Well, Bye.
Too bad he doesn't just clear out his office tomorrow.

newtoSig765 - I feel your pain! In response to the US Census, the Michigan Legislature (then Democrat controlled) redrew all Congressional districts in the Southern part of the state...my district was Republican when I bought my house. Now, I'm in a district with Michigan's liberal la la land, Ann Arbor. And my Congressman is Debbie Dingel Roll Eyes

Best regards,
Mark in Michigan

Agree that Durbin's retirement will not increase the likelihood of a Republican replacing him. Corruption runs so deep in Illinois, likely to the very gates of Hell itself!

Being that its IL.politics we are discussing, you can count on his replacement to be even worse than Durbin.

And thereby continuing the flight of citizens from IL to TX and FL.

My Girlfriend is convinced that she is getting excellent care at our local hospital for her advanced COPD, a result of radiation treatment after breast cancer surgery over 15 years ago. If not for that, I'd be in Texas already.

I had all Republican reps for 50 years until last year when the Dems gerrymandered the state and I now have none!!!!! The state Supreme Court is controlled by the Dems and they didn't see anything wrong with the set up.

My only fear is the next one we get, will be worse. Remember Carol Mosley Braun?

One good thing about these D retirements is that they will lose their positions on the high powered committees. Seniority counts.

Don’t hold your breath on that. It’s 78 Democrats and 40 Republicans. Not sure of the seniority distribution on them though.

I'm not disagreeing with you. It would be very difficult for any Republican to win the seat.

If it were to happen, he/she would have to blunt the huge disparity in Cook County and actually win in many of the collar counties of Chicago. A "common sense" suburban Chicago candidate would have the best chance to make in-roads in the suburbs.

Senator Dick Durbin, who had been Senate Minority Whip since 2015, won reelection to a fifth term in office in 2020, defeating Republican nominee Mark Curran.

Durbin decisively won re-election with 54.9% of the vote. Key to Durbin's landslide victory was the heavily populated and very Democratic Cook County home of Chicago, which he won by around 560,000 votes. Durbin also did well in the suburban, often called collar counties of Chicago, winning all of them except McHenry County. Durbin did well in Champaign County, home of the University of Illinois, and St. Clair County, where his birth home of East St. Louis is located. Nevertheless, Curran did well in most rural areas of the state, including winning rural Alexander County where a Republican had not won since 1972. Durbin became the first senator from Illinois to be elected five consecutive times since senators began being elected by popular vote in 1913.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."
