Yet one more reason that while I may watch their games from time to time, they don't get any money from me.

Cost of hosting Super Bowl remains unclear, but NFL demands a lot

Nearly 200.

That’s how many times “at no cost to the NFL” was mentioned in the National Football League’s Super Bowl wish list to Minneapolis. Now the game is here, and a herculean behind-the-scenes effort is underway to cover the costly tab the League will leave behind for the weeklong extravaganza.

Organizers will not release their final bid for the event. But the League’s requests before Minneapolis was chosen were wide-ranging, from 35,000 free parking spaces on Sunday to free advertising in local media, police escorts for team owners, hundreds of hotel rooms, presidential hotel suites, 14,000 feet of barricades, and even the NFL Network on hotel TVs.

Much of the costs will be covered by the $53 million private fundraising campaign by the local host committee, while the League — at least according to their bid specifications — retains ticket revenue from the game. One prominent sports economist estimated the ticket revenue alone could be worth up to $100 million.

I don't can't watch because I get too disgusted. I see anti-American ghetto thugs running around on a field raking in millions of dollars, and my blood boils.

I found what you said riveting.

I was involved when the game was held in NJ, the next town over from mine.

the NFL comes in and makes all type of demands. security, traffic control, improvements, etc. In our case they made demands to have a number of ems personnel on standby for one of their events. the town called in the people needed only to have the NFL cancel the last minute.

The game was held in East rutherford, NJ yet the NFL and the media called it a NY game. All the benefits for the most part went to the businesses in NYC, not NJ for the most part.

The final straw was the snow storm right before the game. Hundreds were quickly hired to clean the snow from the stadium. Guess who paid for that. Roadway clearing efforts on the surrounding roadways was paid by the state, country and cities.

Many years ago my wife worked for NFL Properties. It was well known that the host cities for the most part didn't make a dime from that game.

I have a friend out there working for Westword One. His description and opinion of the venue is less that complimentary.

I know there are sports fans here but I've come to the conclusion that professional sports are one of the best recipients of corporate welfare from local governments.

The politicians like it because it gets them votes and it keeps the people happy. But the corporate largesse is at the expense of the taxed population.

You have cities fighting each other for the privilege of subsidizing sports arenas which serves to increase the value of the team for the teams' owners.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." The host city should submit a bill which is deducted from the NFL sales and from that amount the host city should get a percent of the NFL winnings.

If they can not agree to that, let them find another city to host the game.

I,too, am tired of having to fund stadiums and events which don't benefit the community. Never has a stadium ever recouped the cost of taxes back to the community. It's a scam and politicians fall for it, so they can say "I did this". I love playing sports but will not contribute to "professional" sports. "Professional Sports", what a contradiction in terms.

My city is still wiping the slobber off it’s face from trying to get Amazon to build its new HQ here, unsuccessfully.

Now they are starting to foam at the mouths because they realize the Panthers could potentially leave.

And I’m sure city council is about to tell us we can’t have meaningful raises...while they offer millions and millions to these groups.

Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here.

Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard.

Big deal. If you want the privilege of hosting the Super Bowl, you gotta pay your share. This is the single biggest sporting event in existence.

The city is making loads of money off this event. There’s upwards of $600M+ economic impact on cities that host.

I love Super Bowl Sunday. And I’m really looking forward to tomorrow.

ETA: a quick google got me this article.

Still, experts say the costs are small price to pay for hosting the sports world's premier event, which provides a boost to a host of businesses large and small. Johnston told CNBC that San Francisco will "reap millions of dollars" through various leisure spending and tax revenue.

Something to remember is that the hosting communities, municipalities and their business' garner millions in revenues in the run up to an event like a SB.
I know it does not fit the current narrative or many of you guys.
I am not an advocate of many aspects. But to plainly leave out a major part or of the equation in disingenuous.

Read a copy of the NFL's "Host City Bid Specifications and Requirements." 153 page document describing how the NFL will take over your city for two weeks.

Every city knows what the deal is before they sign the contract.

My guess is that there may be a slightly higher ratio of thugs in the NFL vs society, but it isn't significant. There are some class acts in the NFL as well as some true shit bags. All worked their asses off to get to where they're at.

Nick Foles comes to mind when thinking about class acts as does JJ Watt. I'm no fan boy of the NFL but they're not all shit bags. FYI, I've watched a total of three games this year. Prior to the kneeling crap the NFL consumed my Sundays. I will be hanging with the wife, kids, grand kids, and friends while smoking a brisket today. Wish me luckBig Grin

I am sure the city makes some money but I can't see it recouping 600 million +. I would like to see some of these expert's accounting ledgers to prove this. Big teams with stadiums year round do nothing to recoup the losses. The Miami stadium, for one, is case in point. The stadium will cost the taxpayers over 1.2 billion over the next 20 years with the loan that was secured. Where I live, they are looking to keep the Mets playing off season here and are looking for over 300 million to build them a stadium to keep them here for maybe a few years. Granted the stadium gets full but very few people stop by our local restaurants, stores, etc., and spend their money. The stadium is close to I-95 so everyone just sits in traffic for hours waiting to get on to go home. I usually work details at the stadium and speak to a lot of people who are just passing through after the game. I don't mean to beat a dead horse but I am very skeptical of these so-called experts.
