Having just spent nearly $700 for two Vikings tickets this season, this article absolutely resonates with me. And to clarify, that's not $700 for the season, that's $700 for two tickets to one game. For that kind of money I could have a one week vacation with my kids somewhere; I've been trying to do one game a year with my son for as long as I can remember, but I think they may have finally price me out of the market.

Price gouging bastards.

Football tickets are insane. $700? That’s almost enough to get a high quality FALD LED Sony screen that you can use for literally 10 years, and no traffic, no high priced concessions, no parking, no commuting, fuck all.

I hear you on the tickets. I’m done with all of it, even music. By the time Ticketmaster or whomever adds up all their fees, I say fuck it, I”ll stream the concert from whatever city at home.

What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

My son will leave for college next year; he will begin his life. I’m not naive enough to think we will continue do this well into his adult life so I am trying to keep it going…but it should not be this bad.

That guy in the article sounds like a real whiner…not winnner…whiner. Hurt my brain to read it.

Sure, I’d like affordable tickets to top-tier entertainers…but you know what? If I can’t afford them I don’t go. I don’t whine at them to lower their prices.

Sheesh.

It isn't really "gouging" or "greed" ~ it is just economic inflation.

I was just talking about the old days of music and concerts with my eye doc a few days ago.
We reminisced about the ambiance, quality of the music back then (70-80's) and the PRICING.

It was so much better on all counts back then.

Even though I can afford the ridiculous pricing ~ I don't go that much.
The acts aren't as good, the ambiance is sterile, the prices are not worth it except for some limited acts and for nostalgia.

Still it is the American way (at least for now) of capitalism.
The old acts know we will pay and they get it - totally understand.
On the other hand I choose to improve my home audio and home theatre instead except on a few rare occasions.

I don't know how the kiddies today afford the prices though (and shitty bands at that).
We used to pay $12 - $18 for the best acts and the biggest theatres and the best seats (if we wait long enough in line).
Now days that won't even cover parking!
But in no way would I blame the band or artists.

So {sigh} I just limit to a few. Frown
* I was going to go see Steely Dan and tix were $65 or so, I love them but the venue was outside in June in Texas and the seats and sound ain't so great - I passed.
* I was going to go see Joe Satriani but the place had vax mandate crap - I passed.
... just to name a few

I can remember seeing Rush the Vapor Trails tour and paying 75 bucks per ticket. I remember saying to myself boys I've seen you 4 times, but this is the last. I'm not paying this much again when I can wait and buy the DVD.

I’m the same way with Metallica.

It goes against everything I believe to in anyway help fill the NFL’s coffers, but in this case I will choose memories with my son over principle.

MLB baseball tickets are bad, too. I won't go to games for what they charge now.

Speaking of concerts, I saw the Eagles, Edgar Winter and Yes at Dillon Stadium in Hartford (in the shadow of the Colt 'Onion') in 1972 for four dollars.

I paid $800 for 2 Bengals season tickets for next season.
I don’t feel that is bad.

I just saw Elton John a few weeks ago and paid just shy of $400 for 2 tickets. Worth absolutely every penny the show was outstanding.
Though not sure I will have the need to see him again even if he does tour again even though this was the farewell tour.

It is all relative I guess. I wouldn’t pay $2 to go to a basketball game.

^ Yeah, but you bought season tickets. The OP bought one-game tickets for nearly the same price. I can't imagine where they're located. Are they on the 50-yard line or up in a private box?

Down in the lower level, but certainly not 50 yard line. Closer to maybe the 15.

It is a home game against the Patriots, and probably my son’s one and only chance to watch Bill Belichick coach.

The experience will be worth the money, but holy smokes are they expensive. And then you add on Ticketmaster’s is bullshit fees.

There’s usually lots of local bands at local venues that you can see for cheap. Sometimes bad, sometimes good, usually decent, and a good time can be had with some friends.

More than one year+ ago, my step-daughter noticed somewhere online that Elton John was playing a concert at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY.
That's not a bad drive from our location so we ordered tickets for the three of us. I was shocked at the cost! OK, more than shocked.
After ordering the tickets we thought it's only five or six months till we go to the concert.
I happened to look more closely at the tickets, and it's 2022, not 2021 for the venue date.
So we haven't gone yet. If I recall, September sometime.
Approaching two years from the date of ordering the tickets until the actual concert date, and COVID going full blast when the tickets were ordered,
we opted for the insurance that refunds your money if the event does not take place. Well worth the small additional cost.

She's an odd child (almost 14 now) when it comes to the music she listens to. She is happy listening to almost anything, and doesn't really enjoy rap music.
We took her to a "Chicago" Concert at the local Indian Reservation Casino and she really enjoyed it.
Elton John is getting old, he won't be doing concerts forever. It should be an experience that the young lady remembers for the rest of her life.

I remember the $12 days well. Then the $20 ones in the 80s. My most recent one was John Prine (RIP) at $75 a couple years back.

McCartney came through the area a few years ago at several hundred for the nosebleeds. I passed.

I get inflation, and that's OK, but I agree that prices are way too high.

I bought tickets 3 years ago for the "Stadium Tour" with Def Leppard and Motley Cru. It was supposed to be in 2020 but then Covid happened.

I've never gotten a chance to see either band.

But these seats are good, but 250 each.... That's nuts but it may be my last chance to see Def Leppard when they are still good, and I'll probably be disappointed by Motley Cru...

Mid to late 70's every concert was 8 or 9 dollars. No way I would pay hundreds of dollars to watch somebody play music. But what do I know,
I listen to talk radio. Smile

The tour was actually supposed to be in 2020. We bought our tickets in 2019 and it got rescheduled twice due to Covid.
I will tell you it is worth the wait and every penny. We had an absolute blast. I would have loved to see him years ago. From doing the whole show behind the piano he can still entertain.
He would get up on occasion to great the crowd but one can tell walking is a bit difficult for him these days.

With concerts the ‘tribute bands’ are enough for me. The cost is reasonable, easy to get to, plenty good enough.

One a few years ago was ‘Hollywood Nights’, a Bob Seger tribute band. I’m kinda thinking they were better than the current 70+ year old Seger.

George Strait in Las Vegas was $500 for two seats in the middle of the first section of bleachers at T-Mobile Arena. It was a wonderful program. The stage personnel were stationary while Mr. Strait performed to all eight corners of the stage. But, it was amazingly expensive. Thinking back, if I take an guestimated average ticket price of $400 and the sell-out crowd size of 20,000, that’s $8 million. Some websites have average ticket prices for Mr. Strait of nearly $1000.

Anyway, there is NO way that the concert expenses are anywhere near $8 million. A dozen musicians? Roadies, buses, etc. Sound and lighting techs. Arena fees. No way these costs are close to the gate revenue.

Like most things, the price is related to the opportunity to pay. I will only see Mr. Strait once. So, I am willing to pay a lot. Scarcity inflates price.
