So changing over to the Glock 20 from the Sig XTen for my hiking and photography carry gun this summer. I’d forgotten how expensive changing platforms can be. Between holsters, red dot, mounting plate and experimenting with different carry ammo, I’ve easily got more money tied up in other stuff than just buying the gun. Ugh!

Magazines, spare parts, tools, etc. Yes, it adds up.

I just did a few quick searches.
New Glock 20≈ $625
Spare mags 3 @ $40 sounds about right≈ $120
New Beltman belt $70-$400≈ $125 (hmmm, maybe 2):≈ $250
Let’s pick on Ryan for an R Grizzle holster (okay 2, and a mag carrier Smile) $[135x2+70]≈ $340
Test 100 rounds of 3 reputable brands: Ouch this stuff is expensive: $525
So far you’ve spent $1860 and you haven’t even called Dave Truong to price a new pair of earrings to smooth things over with your better half.
You’re gonna be working some OT.

Think of what it would cost to change over your photography platform, say, from DSLR to mirrorless.

Yes, it’s not cheap, but occasionally it’s fun.

I’ve been through this a few times in the past 30 + years.
At this point, thanks to Glock!
G-17, G-19, G-26- I can use the G-17 mags
G-21, G-30, I can use the G-21 mags.
Occasionally one can find a good “bikini” style holster that fits multiple guns as well.

+ RDS
+ Wml
+ this
+ that…

Yep, not cheap at all.

Check out US Duty Gear for a Safariland duty style OWB retention belt holster. Safariland is lacking for Gen5 large frame Glocks. Just buy for G21, works perfectly with my G20gen5.

You ain't kidding. I finally decided that whatever I get next-pistol wise, needs to be inline with what platforms I have now. I hope I can stick to it.

My friend just took delivery of a P229 Legion last week. The Romeo is on its way also. I’m sure he is feeling the pain as well. At least he already loads 9mm. I did tell him he needs a .357 Sig barrel for it. Big Grin

You're absolutely right, and this is the reason that I've tried really hard to standardize around a few specific platforms. My curiosity/lust to try new stuff occasionally gets the better of me though.

As a handloader I'm thankfully at a point where I can make any of the calibers I might want, so at least I'm not buying new dies and components anymore.

It's also why I started making my own Kydex holsters because it's way cheaper than buying new ones every time I get a new gun or try a different carry technique.

Ya know, I think I’m gonna go the other way with this from now on!
I’m just gonna “Gangsta” it- just tuck it into my waistband. It’s definitely cheaper!

The thought of an Sig XTen having an uncommanded discharge in a chest holster while paddling my kayak in the middle of a lake in the middle of nowhere Alaska was absolutely terrifying.

Just think about the cost of changing Camera Platforms. In 2024 I decided to give my D750 kit to my nephew and went with Nikon Mirrorless. If you want to burn thru about 10K pretty quickly it's very easy to do with new camera gear. Heck Nikon has a 600mm lens that sells for roughly 14K.

I've stopped counting.
