I believe I've posted this before but it's worth posting again. If you're in a hotel room, throw the security latch and also the deadbolt. I work in a lot of hotels as a contractor, we access a lot of rooms, some of them occupied, some even with the "do not disturb" up. If you're in the room and you don't want folks barging in on you, please throw the latches and deadbolts.

That is all.

I usually try to go a step further by jamming a chair against the door so it at least slows down a determined intruder.

There are many dozens of vids on the Www saying the same thing.

And another many dozen vids on how bad guys defeat both deterants.

And more vids of how perverts hide cameras and mics.

And a few about trick mirrors.

Then there are the U V light vids, those get pretty nasty.

I always throw all the bolts and put out the DND sign.
I don’t need towels or room service. I’m happy to leave the tip, just déjame en paz.

Unfortunately, that's not always possible these days, unless you're only staying one night.

After the 2017 Vegas casino mass shooting, most hotels instituted a policy that says that staff must enter every occupied room at least once every 1-2 days (it varies from chain to chain).

So even with DND signs, even if you say leave me alone, even if you say you don't need towels... At most hotels they are still going to want to put eyes on your room every day or so.

VERY annoying! I spent three months in Las Vegas in conjunction with the first field installation of a new telephone central office system. I was night shift for part of that assignment. No matter how many times I told hotel management and housekeeping manager that I was working nights and did not want to be disturbed during my daytime sleep, the Do Not Disturb sign was frequently ignored, with loud knocking accompanied by a voice announcing "House Keeping!"

I checked into a motel one evening . When I opened the door there was a woman rolling out of the bed . I guess she heard me fumbling with the door . I just said " Excuse me . Sorry ! " . Went back to the desk and told the guy what happened . He seemed amused by it . I'll bet that poor woman wasn't .

^^^^ Ha! I had something similar happen in San Francisco.

Checked intot the hotel and went up to the room. Opened the door with my key but it was not occupied. Then I saw a hair brush next to the sink and figured out the room was taken already.

Yup, I agree with the OP. Lockup that door when you in for the night.

No, but we've walked in on people sleeping and otherwise NOT expecting the hotel to gain entry in to their room.

Rogue's post notwithstanding, why would you access any rooms with the "Do Not Disturb" by the door? It's there for a reason. Folks do not want their rooms disturbed, whether the latch is flipped or not. You're blaming the folks for not latching their door, when you're the one who is not supposed to enter. There is no reason to access any room with that placard hanging at the door, unless there is some kind of emergency. I would be pissed if anyone barged in my room when that sign is on.

I cant say I disagree with you. My DND is always up when I'm in the room, as well as the security latches, maybe even a chair in front of the door if the hotel is a shitbox. Typically we're servicing the room on behalf of a furniture vendor or directly for the hotel. We will give the hotel a timeline for us to complete the task and usually request they take the rooms out of service. If they don't want to do that, we will work unoccupied rooms or occupied rooms when housekeeping is doing their thing. If we cant get in to the room during those 3 scenarios, they have a choice to make, do the work themselves another time or do a "knock and greet".

We never access occupied rooms without a hotel escort, and we certainly don't barge when the DND is up. Most hotels will call ahead of time in an effort to get the guest to grant access when the DND is displayed.

The point of this thread is explain how easily someone can make their way in to your room if you dont use the locks.
