One of the cats I grew up with would not lap water directly out of the dish. She would insist on wetting her whole paw, then licking it dry and repeating. I've seen other cats do this, so maybe it's a thing?
I have a cat that does that. He will dip his paw in the water and then lick it off. He will do this 5 or 6 times, then finally drink from the water bowl.
I have another cat that really wants me to pet him while he eats. He will meow at me until I finally pet him. If I ignore him long enough he'll go ahead and eat.
Another cat does not like to drink water unless it's fresh. He wants me to get him a fresh cold water in the dish. If I have a glass of water he wants it. Sometimes he will go all day, it seems, without drinking, then I will give him a fresh cold water dish and he will get after it. If he gets thirsty enough he will drink the existing water. All water is changed out every day. No water is dirty or stale or whatever.
My dog passed away a year ago. She had a favorite toy squirrel. She would take 3 or 4 morsels of her dry food and take them to her toy squirrel, leave them there, then go back to her dish and eat. Later on she would eat the few she'd stashed at her toy squirrel. .

My feral stray (that is no longer either), she won't eat wet canned food. She just licks the moist meat until it's dry and leaves it.
When I caught her and her kittens, I had to shut the kittens in the bathroom as they would plow through their food and then attack her dish, pushing her out of the way. She just won't bite a chunk off and chew it like she does w/ dry food. It bothers me because (I think) these fancy wet foods are a treat but she won't eat them. Just licks them dry.

My dog growls to get my attention to let me know he wants/needs something. It's a different sounding growl from an angry/warning growl. Took me a while to realize that's what he was doing it for, and now I think it's funny but I keep telling him he better not do it to anyone else cause they probably won't. I tried training it out of him but ultimately failed, so I just deal with it.

Ours grunts down the hall when she wants a drink out of the bath tub faucet instead of her water bowl. She’s big enough to stand over the edge and drink from it. Other times she drinks right from her water bowl.

Our mini schnauzer will allow us to sleep in until 8a on the weekends. Then it’s a parade of toys, scratching on the side of bed, and audible grumbling til we get up.

We have had a few dogs over the years that did exactly that. The only issue comes if something really exiting grabs their attention while they are in the middle of cleaning the floor. Then you have dog kibbles around. They don't come back and clean it up later.

A stray cat decided to move in and tell me what she wants to eat. She wants Meow Mix with the tender centers.
Not really eating much of of any other cat food. She will not eat ham, sausage, chicken, or beef of any kind.

My dog will sometimes grab a mouthful of food, run into another room, drop it on the floor and eat it. And then repeat. He does the same thing with treats most times. We don't restrict his food but some days it's like he thinks he found something awesome.
We have a cat that will only drink water dripping from a faucet. He lets out run over his neck and catches it as it runs off. He's my wife's cat from well before we were together, so it's going to be that way until he's passed.

Our dog has so many quirks compared to the others we've had over the years, but just sticking to food habits, one that we find funny is that whenever she gets a treat (usually chicken jerky), she has to "kill" it by swatting it with her paws a few times while dancing around. She'll then finish it off by biting it shaking the hell out of it. She looks pretty mean when doing it but you can still pet her and her tail is wagging the whole time.
Our Goldendoodle likes to do that too. He'll load his mouth and bring it from the kitchen to the living room where he can be by us. He doesn't make a mess. Unusual.

My college roommate had to get one of those tip-resistant bowls. His boxer would dump the bowl out & eat off the floor, rather than eat from the bowl. With the tip-resistant bowl, she'd nose the food out & eat it off the floor.

We've trained all our dogs to sit and wait by their bowls and wait for a command before they can eat.
When we trained our Border Collie as a pup, she was so cute that we often would either pat or kiss her on the head while we released the others.
We didn't realize that we were training her to que on this. 11 years later and she won't touch her food if we don't pat her head just right. If you do it wrong, she'll just sit there and whine waiting for you to do it right so she can eat.
Originally posted by bigeinkcmo: That's interesting. Our cat has a weird interest with water too. She likes the drips when you shower. It's pretty damn funny because she'll start meowing if the bathroom door is closed. She expects you to let her hang out while you dry off.
Our two cats wait for you to exit the shower then they both go in and lick the water off the tiles. It is an almost daily routine.

My 9 year old cat uses her paw to pull a single kernel of cat food from the bowl, onto the floor. Eats that one, then does it again. Also only wants to drink from the faucet.
Our Bengal will sit in the bathtub and meow until you arrive. She wants to drink out of the faucet - sits on the edge, reaches over and laps off the slow stream of water.
